My it is heartbreaking when a feathered loved one is ill. If another CAV visit and stay is out of the question then make her cage as comfortable as possible. Lower perches, add flat ones if poss.

Is she pain free as far as you know?

I am so very sorry, bless her heart and praying for a miracle.

I spoke to the vet hospital this am. CAV is out till tomorrow. They can take Pacho overnight and fource feed her but no overnight monitoring.
I put some foam under her newspaper. If she does fall she wont be a hard landing.

If I lower the perch food/water dish won't be accessible.
If I put her on the floor with food and water she will be walking around in that foul poop she is making.

Going to as vet first thing in morming about that milk thistle. It sound worth trying but needs tobe done by someone who knows how.

Working on video upload.

Check your stock of older perches looking for the bigger ones in the 2.5" (65 mm) to 3+" (75+ mm) range as they are easier for her to hold and balance on. Call the local wood working shops, big box stores and lumber yards and see if they have any end-cuts from wider Stairway Hand Rails. I tightly rap them with a cloth that has a color that doesn't spook your Amazon. The combination of a wider flatter surfaces helps and the cloth helps with additional gripping and warmth!

Prays, your way!!!

FYI: The video would have me guessing Air Sack Infection. Seen that rocking way to many times!

The Milk Thistle extract I got from my vet was just an additive to his drinking water. Outside the cage I keep diet ginger ale mixed with the extract for both bird access. Boogers meds are ruff on his liver also and it does no harm for him to get some too. Hope you can get him over this hump so he can have a chance for diet change and meds to help in recovery.

Please don't give this. Diet drinks nearly always contain aspartame, they are not 100% sure what it is doing to us yet?

Pacho has been on a pellet and fresh food diet for at least a year. Ever since the vet told me she was overweight.

I tried Harisons. The birds just threw them on the floor.
The thing that bothers me the most is that plumas, the bird that died in December 2016 had the healthiest diet.
Loved carrots. Loved apples and ate zoopreem pellets. Hi died with some kind of neuralgica problem.
Pacho was Plumas's partner and cage mate. Exposed to the same thing's food and environment.
Pacho eats healthier than my YNA Bingo whom I have had longer. Biggest difference is Bingo is slightly younger, just over 30.

You can bet Bingo is going on a diet starting yesterday.

OH MAN.. I am going to try and not get my hope's up but I think Pacho may have turned the corner.

#1 she made a poop that looks about 1/2 way normal.
the solid to liquid ratio looks to be about 50%. The solid portion is a nice normal green. The liquid is still yellow.

#2 Pacho HATES my cell phone. When I went to take a picture of her poop she turned around on her perch to make sure that nasty cell phone did not attack her. That’s one of her first normal reactions I have gotten from her.

Day by day, until she is herself, you are getting all the prayers and good thought this household has! Even Stinker Tinker said woof. FWIW Sally Blachards Handbook says yellow ish and smelly urates in poops are usualy a bacterial involvement. Hoping for the best in the AM.

I was told by the vet diet drink is preferred to the high fructose sugars in the regular drinks. ?? I assume she knows?? She does have the shingle. She is not just a CAV... she is an avian specialist and very involved in every facet of both my birds health. But I appreciate your concern just the same. Thank you.

Oh.. and I also make sure its caffeine free..

Have you tried a little regular fruit juice instead. My comments are for your birds benefit honestly. Aspartame is not good, have heard of cancer being linked but too early to be definitive. Have a good look at the ingredients for yourself and also be aware that our birds organs are way, way, smaller than our own. Ultimately the choice is yours.

Do you weigh Bingo? A good starting point. Plenty of veggies especially green ones and importantly ensure no preservative in any food. If any organ stress is already there then that will certainly not help. Encourage movement or flight if possible.

It sometimes does good to stand back and completely examine the living conditions and food our fids are receiving. We are only human and not infallible.

Unwell organs in our birds can increase in size and then interfere with nerves.

Good signs/news of Pacho, be strong little lady we are all rooting for you. :)

Im just not one that bought in to the "aspartame conspiracy". I specifically wanted gingerale because it helps with symptoms of PDD. Booger is on borrowed time and doubtful even if the rumors on aspartame are true Booger would live long enough for it to cause harm. Just the meds I have to give him are toxic to his liver. I truly understand your motivation, really I do. I also understand there are pros and cons to most things when you are treating a sick bird. I guess Im doing something right. The fact that Booger is still alive tells me that. My vet lady is amazed as well. We might be breaking some sort of PDD/ABV record.
Didn't mean to hijack this thread. Sorry Tex.. Im back with ya concerned over Patcho and getting him over this hump. Wondering if you have asked your vet about "aloe liver detox". I read good things about it.. in fact ordered some to add to Cookies regiment.

Thanks re clarification definitely get you, Plum has FLD/heart problems, it's a balancing act with them. I did mention and link Detox earlier for Texsize :) I cannot get Plum to take it neat, he needs it diluting unfortunately. Good wishes to you and Booger. :)

Thursday.

So this makes the 4th day since Pacho came down sick.
She survived another night.

Given her the medication and some baby bird formula. She has learned how to keep from swallowing the formula. Having a very hard time getting much down her.

Spoke with the ACV this morning. He mixed up some stuff with the milk thistle.

Yesterday I stayed home again but I really must go in today.

Also got a heat lamp. Have not set it up yet. It worries me cuz I sure don't want to overheat her. she always feels cool to the touch. her feet are not very warm also. not exactly cold.

Ill see what I can do before I go off to work.

yeah be careful with a heat lamp. I have one set up for Booger cuz he has no body fat to keep him warm at nite. I just rigged a desk lamp shining a 40 watt bulb at a black dishcloth attached to the side of Boogers cage. Then I covered the lamp so convection would warm the air in the upper part of the cage that remains covered or semi-covered during the day. Booger also has a "blankie" hanging over top of his fave perch. He wraps up in it like its a sleeping bag. Not sure what kinda lamp you have but ya don't need a lot of wattage to make the cage toasty for em. Hope you can get some of the milk thistle mix down. I know both you and your birdie are both miserable right now. Id sacrifice a goat at midnite for ya if I thought it might help. Hang in there.

My heart goes out to you with Patcho, dealing with illness is never easy.

I'm not an expert here, but my BFA Sydney has been chronically ill since I got him several years ago. He's anywhere between 35-45 years old, but I have no way of knowing for sure, this is just based on information given to me when I got him.

He has chronic air sac problems (seems to almost "leak" into one particular sac in his shoulder area) and bacterial infections. He may also have liver issues due to being on a seed diet most of his life, but I haven't gotten him rechecked in a while for that, which is entirely my fault.

For medications, the only way I've been able to get him to take it, is by spoon. I mix the dosage in unsweetened cinnamon apple sauce, but in your case you might want to use sweetened for calories. It's only a tablespoon or so, so it wouldn't be much.

For dietary support, I make egg bread, which is essentially cornbread with extra eggs added, usually 4-5 depending on how much I'm making, and adding a few scoops of parrot formula for additional calories, vitamins and minerals. I also sprinkle Prime supplement on his fresh food a few times a week, larger selection of vitamins and minerals, as well as probiotics. He also gets a capfull of apple cider vinegar in his water a few times a week, more often in the warmer months.

I don't use a heat lamp for him, but this year I'm considering a heated perch or heated panel for him. If I need it though, I do have a ceramic heat bulb and a standard heat lamp with a dome that has a dimmer switch but I haven't needed to use it for him.

I am skeptical of some homeopathic treatments, but I am considering milk thistle for him, but I may go with the actual seeds rather than a formulated liquid. Ask your vet about Emer-aid powder as well, you have to get it through a vet as it's not available to the public, but it helped one of my birds last longer than she should have.
https://emeraid.com/emeraid-omnivore/
It's much more easily absorbable than a lot of critical care diets, but ideally it's syringe fed or tube fed.

I'm sure there's things I'm forgetting, but this is all just from my personal experience and I hope that there's something that you can use to Patcho's benefit.
