My best advice would be to go down to a local rescue, and actually handle them. Most rescues have bird handling classes either free or for a nominal fee...
Parrots for Dummies (Nikki Moustaki) is an excellent book for both beginners and experienced birders. Other than that it wouldn't hurt to go to your local library and get as much as you can on the subject.
I am waiting for a B & G macaw. In the meantime I have been searching the internet for info. There is a ton of useful ijfo on the web & through Utube. Check it out when U get a chance.
