Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
My best advice would be to go down to a local rescue, and actually handle them. Most rescues have bird handling classes either free or for a nominal fee...

This, to me, is a hands on thing.

1 green cheek conure (Kumar)
2 male budgies (Charlie and Diego)
Parrots for Dummies (Nikki Moustaki) is an excellent book for both beginners and experienced birders. Other than that it wouldn't hurt to go to your local library and get as much as you can on the subject.
