Advice needed for Holly & Stewie

[Holly the U2]

My biggest fear has come to life, my wife is tired of a 80 x 40 cage & two java trees taking over the living room.

She says I can have one 40 x 30 cage. I explained to her that that isn't big enough for two cockatoos, plus Holly is cage territorial & would never share a cage with Stewie. She said that I should consider re-homing one of them.

That is not a option, I could never pick one over the other.

I think my only play here is a double stack cage (I think 40 x 30 is the biggest they make)

each compartment is 40 x 30 x 36, I measured there current space & where the main center perch is. its 32 inches from the top, all the space below that they don't use anyway..

my problem is who do I put on the bottom, maybe a can extend the legs to make the cage sit higher

my toos current schedule (sleep from 8 to 7, out from 7 to 10, caged from 10-2 & out from 2-8)

any advise would be appreciated

Oh boy.. I'm sorry for your situation. Doesn't she know one cage isn't fair? Maybe downsize the Java tree stand? I hope you figure things out. Good luck.

Sorry - I didn't like the stack able cage because I could never figure out who to put on the bottom. My toos figured it out by themselves.

Awww Gee, I feel for you and for Stewie and Holly. It would be a shame to deprive them of the huge cage they are accustomed to. Do they spend most of the day on their java stands? If so, a smaller cage may not be so bad. Do you have a specific cage in mind? Or smaller play stands?

I was thinking about splitting the cage into two compartments (top & bottom)if that is even possible, maybe using one of the bottom pans to separate. my birds never venture to the bottom

Something similar to the above. I had my LS2s in there but not for long...maybe a week or two at the most. Once they started hanging out together I put them in another cage.

I must admit there are times when I get overwhelmed by the number of cages and play stands in my family room and kitchen. I can understand what Holly is saying.

If you stand back and look at the whoooole house, have you got the birds in the most practical spot? Is it a matter of furniture rearranging?

What about corner cages for them? if they're tucked away, can you get away with bigger dimensions?

that one would be too small, I wish I could see a 40 x 30 double stack in person, I can make a better decision that way.

I won't speak for Kyoto, but I think I know what the post implied!!

Is your wife's ultimatum cast in concrete? Can she be bribed? I don't mean to be patronizing and disrespectful to her feelings, but is there any possible compromise, given your attachment to both birds?

Worst case scenario, perhaps a stackable cage is the best option.

Perhaps offer to take the wife shopping for new furniture that better fits around Holly and Stewie's cage Also, any chance the Java stands could be moved elsewhere, or perhaps smaller play stands or do something that is suspended from the ceiling around their cage and get rid of the play stands altogether? I'm sure a compromise can be reached that does not include getting rid of them.

And I don't mean this offensively at all, but have you explained to your wife just how much these birds mean to you? They're like your feathered CHILDREN. She may know you "like" them, but may not realize the deep connection you feel to them and how *devastated* you'd be to see them go. Women (I know, I am one) respond to sensitivity and their maternal instincts being played into. They aren't birds who take up a bunch of room, they are feathered kids you'd do anything for to keep happy and healthy.

How about switching rooms? She can have the entire living room and sleep in it too, and you get the entire bedroom for your birds, a TV, and a cot to crash on? Or vice-versa. If you have to settle on a stacked double, I'd put her in the bottom cage. The wife. No, I'm not a man!

That was my first thought *giggles*
Although I realize for you this is not funny. It would be a horrible position to be put in. Having to choose between the wishes of your spouse and what is GOOD for your fids. My suggestion would be talk to her, really talk to her. Find out if the problem is really the cages or if something else is bothering her and that was something she chose to complain about. I know nothing of your situation but if it in fact IS a space issue. Ask her if there is any other way you can keep the larger cages if you move things around. If you are in the financial position to take the advice of shopping for new furniture... by all means try bribery too... it is not over rated!

Well had a long talk & the problem goes beyond the cage, the feather dust drives her nuts.

I have promised to dust every night, this weekend we are going to re-arrange our living room, the play stands are definitely going into another room.

If we cant comprise, I have a friend that has a 40 x 30 double stack (he has a CAG in the top & a U2 in the bottom), I went to his house last night to see it in person, its alot bigger than I imagined. He said his birds do fine in it but its all they've ever known.

I keep coming back to actual space, the double stack is 40w x 30d x 34h for each cage
their current cage is 40w x 40d x 38h, I consider the space below the main perch dead space.
