Any advice on how I bird will act after given a sedative to calm them for treatment

My Senegal parrot was in the emergency vet last night He was attacked by cat that came in through my patio door. The only wounds they found was a cut on each wing nothing to where he would need stitches so they gave him some type of sedative that didn’t make him go to sleep, but calmed him so they could treat the wound and examine him fully. His lung sound good his heart is good. This was around 1130 last night and it’s now 334 the next day and he’s still pretty drowsy he just wants to sleep. He did wake up and drink some water and he has ate a little bit so he is eating and drinking, but not much. I called the vet to see if this was a normal and they are not an avian specialist and all of the vets are closed because of the holiday, and all of the emergency vets and none around me have an avian specialist. They just told me to watch him and see if he eats and drinks so I’m wondering if this is possibly from the sedative that they gave him I’ve seen on other forums that sometimes they give too much because it’s hard to measure with birds just wanted to know if anyone else has experience. . he is on antibiotics and pain medicine. The pain medication should not make him drowsy so it’s not the pain medication. Thank you so much. I think I’ve put all the information that I could think of.

It sounds like you took him to an emergency vet and not an avian certified veterinary.
not criticizing, at that hour you do what you can.

so there is no way to know how appropriate the sedative was he was given.

the other ting is .
it doesn’t matter how minor a scratch he might have gotten.
he needs to be put on a course of antibiotics.
cat claws and teeth have bad bacteria and can be deadly to your bird.

I would follow up with an avian certified veterinary asap.

As far as the sedative.
one of my birds was given drops in his nose (nares).
it was for x ray and it really zonked him out.
but it was short acting and he was back to normal in minutes.e

it could be the vet gave something long acting due to the trauma of the event.
just a wild guess.

Yes, unfortunately none of our emergency vets are avian certified except for one and they are absolutely horrible. I would never take any animals to them. He is on antibiotics for seven days. They gave him antibiotics and pain medication for him to be on so he definitely has that. He’s a little more active so I’m starting to lean towards, they gave him a little bit higher dose than they should’ve and all of our vets are closed until Tuesday because of the holiday, but I’m getting him into the vet on Tuesday a avian certified vet

Update : Swayze is starting to act more normal he is sleeping more than he normally does but he is alert hes eating and drinking good he is not making much noise but he is starting to. This has been traumatic for both of us so maybe he is really just overwhelmed and medicated . I cant get a appointment until at least Tuesday so any advice until then please share !

It sounds like he is doing well.
Other than continuing the antibiotics and keeping a close eye on him I can’t think of anything.
Keep him calm and give him time to recover.

If you have an animal hospital near your place of residence where they see exotic birds, got to the emergency room of that hospital ASAP. This is no joke!!
