My partner and I have been considering building an aviary to keep a couple of aviary birds and potential use as a flight aviary for the boys. Would love some ideas and opinions on cost effective framing =)

Could I use pvc pipe for a semi permanent frame?

Have seen these advertised cheap and wondered how they would go as a frame? Thoughts and opinions.

We also have a lot of wood in the shed which would require more labor and some kind of protection from chewing!

Are you asking about the greenhouse frame? I expect that it would rust immediately. It's on the inside of the plastic for the greenhouse. Exposed, as it would be if you added bird mesh, it'd rust. You could use it, but I wouldn't expect it to last long.

PVC pipe can be used as framing but it will dry out and crack over time. The main thing with plastic is stabilizing and weighing it down sufficiently. I don't think it'd be a good idea to do a high aviary in it, it'd take off, but I've seen rabbit runs (low structures) and they are ok in the lightweight material. You also have to make it strong enough to keep out any "critters". I wouldn't want a lightweight aviary that a decent-sized dog could push over outside. By the time you buy weights and pegs and enough piping to make it firm enough, you'll have forked out enough money to have done it in something more solid, I reckon. Some things seem cheap, but not when you take into account everything you'd need.

You can get around timber being chewed if you put the mesh on the inside (that's what you do for bunnies), but if you've got chewers, you might not want them having such access to the birdwire... You'll also be up for the cost of paint (and repainting, down the track)

I'd be looking at getting a galvanized steel frame fabricated. Lasts pretty much forever so you won't be having to do anything to it. Or, check out the local tip shop for recycled materials.
