So I put my Cuisinart slow cooker into the dishwasher overnight to clean and found my lovebird dead in the morning. Poor Pippin. I never thought that the dishwasher could heat up the coating on the slow cooker enough to off gas.

Oh no! Thanks for the warning! So sad :( RIP Pippin...

How sad. Why can't they make kitchen appliances without those coatings? I wouldn't think a dishwasher would get that hot.

THe fact is anything with a heating element is a candidate to be lethal to your parrot, under the wrong conditions. THese days heating elements all have a corrosion preventative coating, usually some form of Teflon or PTFE. under normal use the danger is quite low, but any use or abuse not planned by the manufacturer can release those toxic fumes.

I do wonder if the OP had maybe an older dishwasher? Or a malfunction as wrench said. I will say I wash my Crockpot in the dishwasher all the time and have never had a problem. :(

I will bet you wash the ceramic thingy , the pot. And I will bet the OP washed the electrical base.

I have an electric frying pan that I can put in the dishwasher. It's all one piece with an electrical base. I won't be doing that anymore.
