Sick budgie Mariah

I've noticed that a few of Mariah's friends from the big cage on the other side of the room are coming over to Mariahs bin to visit her. They perch on the crate on top of her bin, look down at her and chirp. They seem to know that she's not feeling well. It looks like empathy to me.

I hope Mariah bounces back to her old self. She is much loved by bird kin and human kin. It's so hard to see our little fluff balls struggling.

Mariah is doing okay. She's eating, pooping and grooming herself so I think she's not that bad. I think she needs to build up her strength. When I found her on the floor she had probably been trying to fly back up to the top of the cage and exhausted herself trying.

Early this morning l made a fresh batch of chop. Its delicious! Ive just discovered that plain brown Minute Rice is great for soaking up excess water. I hate soggy chop.

Mariah was getting a bit restless in her bin so I gave her a ladder in her bin today and she slowly climbed up to the perch on the small playstand I put in her bin. I took the grate off the top to talk to her and see what she would do. She flapped and flew out and straight up about 10 feet toward her cage, missed the cage and landed on the floor.
I picked her up and put her on top of the cage and she's been hanging out there all day. I'm going to try putting her back in the cage tonight and hopefully she's strong enough to stay on a perch.

I wish I knew what was wrong with her but I don't think it's anything fixable and I'm not too sure I want to know. It seems like chronically ill birds have a tendency to die within days of a diagnostic vet visit and I don't want her to die. I'll just keep making her safe and comfortable. When it's her time to fly over the Rainbow Bridge I want her at home and peaceful.

For Yuri, I believe her foot issue was a result of the object she mostly passed, not ABV. Do know that many birds are positive for ABV but it really only is an issue if they start having symptoms of AG (avian ganglioneuritis), which can be caused by borna. Many birds are positive with no issues and no illness.

I would take her in for an X-Ray and some bloodwork to test for metal toxicity.

At my recent vet appointment I told the vet my Ekkie was diagnosed with bornavirus by a previous exotic vet. He told me it’s speculated as a precursor for PDD (PDD is a death sentence, ABV is not). He also informed me the best way to evaluate PDD is by necropsy.

Mariah is very clumsy when she walks but she can still fly okay. She also sleeps a lot but she eats a lot, too. She doesn't seem like she has trouble gripping the perch. She hasn't been "right" since I got her about 18 months ago.

Our dear sweet budgie Mariah has been unwell for over a year but she always had just enough strength to keep on going. We just got back from Christmas in NJ and she was very weak. We found her on the floor of our house unable to fly back up to the cage. One of her cagemates, her brother, Jimmy Buffettbird, was sitting with her on the floor, keeping her company. We put her in the hospital bin with food and water but she died less than an hour later.

We loved you, Mariah, and will miss you dearly. Fly high, sweet Mariah.

Thanks. I'm happy we took care of her and didn't give up on her when she was chronically sick. She was weak for many months but always mustered up enough strength to climb out of the cage every morning and spend her day on top with the others enjoying a fresh bowl of chop. She was a big girl, so soft, fluffy, and gentle with a sweet chirp.

I think Mariah's friend Jimmy misses her. He's fully flighted and healthy but we found him walking around on the floor in the area where we found him and Mariah yesterday before she died. I think he was looking for her. I hope he's not too sad.
