Parrots
One female Congo African Grey
I purchased one about 2 years ago. My 28 year old female CG is so afraid of it. I put it away. Brought it out again and will put it in front of her tall cage with hopes that she gets used to it. I will take suggestions to help me get her used to it. I want her on it during the day so she can be out of her cage. Otherwise, she comes down from her open cage and wanders, but birds chew on furniture and baseboards. No can do! Also, she wants to get under my desk, but I worry about her chewing on my computer and electric cords. Thank you.

I feel your pain! I've been trying to get Yvons used to a perch set up on an empty cage for 6 months, and the little brat still avoids it as if it's a bird-eating monster. Someone's bird had a swing they avoided for 10 years.

I'm hoping Peanuts will persuade my brat to at least come near the perches...

The perfect parrot happily sits on a parrot stand! I had a Goffin's Cockatoo that refused to stay on one. She wasn't scared of it but as soon as I put her on it she would jump down to the floor and run across the room to wherever I was sitting and climb onto my lap.

My 21 CAG Nameliss will get on a stand, climb down and go exploring. She will not stay on it no matter what the toys or location. She prefers the couch, chairs and counters. She gets under furniture. I worry she will chew on cords. Fortunately she ignores molding and the like. I honestly believe in her case she's bored. Or she's exercising the mind set that toddlers and teenagers have. You want me to stay where? I made safe zones. I put down a piece of acrylic from Lowe's or Home Depot. Half and one inch PVC pipe edging made to be a inch high off space under also from Lowe's or Home Depot. Edging is high enough so she can perch. I place it wherever I want. On a table, floor, counter, coffee table or wherever I am going to be doing something for awhile. One semi permanent acrylic and PVC is on end table near my crochet chair of choice. I don't put acrylic on her cage. I have a variety of bird safe chewables. Foraging, foot, wooden bird safe blocks and beads, different colors, texture, what ever. She's usually content to stay there. I rotate toys there often. She likes to be in same general area I am. I can cut the acrylic to fit the area I want. Same thing with the tubing. Cheap, easy to make, to clean and more. There's videos out there where people make PVC play areas for parrots. Very versatile. I don't use the glue for the end joints. I don't want to take that chance with one drop of glue being chewed. Nameliss took a hatred/fear/dislike for a beautiful (to me anyway) expensive hand made wooden swing. It sat in her cage 10 yrs. I took it out and it didn't have any birdie poo on it. Nameliss is fairly tolerant about new things. I never understood what her problem was with it. So it can be a long wait for her to accept it.

My bird stand (tree stand) spent several years in my bedroom as a clothes rack, no birds would use it.

But when Bingo was ……fading I noticed he wanted to be able to look out the window. I moved it into the living room next to the window.
He spent a lot of time looking out the window near the end and I was able to sit next to him.

Thank you. Too funny. I parked it in front of her cage with hopes she would get used to it, like the vacuum (which she did years ago). Then, it was gone. My husband put it in the guest bathroom because the parrot was frozen into the corner of her big cage. !!!

You could try introducing it a bit more gradually to desensitize her to it. I would try to find a distance at which she is comfortable with it/relaxed and leave it there for day or so. Then scoot it a bit closer, and leave it again for a day or two. Scoot it a bit closer again, and so on until she is desensitized to it. Once she is desensitized, make it a positive place that she wants to be.

I’m trying to get my rescue Amazon more comfortable staying on her tree stand for longer periods of time. She is staying for longer and longer periods, but it is gradual. Maximum is about an hour now, but it was only a few minutes initially. She has lots of positive reinforcement on her stand. For example, this is where I place her to eat her very favorite snacks. I also feed her dinner on her stand. There are toys on it to play with. I’ve also recently started doing some of her training sessions on her stand to further positively reinforce it. My hope is that she’ll be content staying there for longer periods of time, but we’ll see how it goes. She’s very busy and curious, and wants to get into everything. 😊

My Perjo would never perch on a remote stand but she perches on almost anything else.
the top bar of of a metal step stool, the top of the freezer door if it’s open when she flies into the kitchen, railing going upstairs,
