I live in a studio apartment with a cockatiel. My landlady is going to carpet the hallway outside my door. I've gotten contradictory responses about whether it would be safe for my bird to stay in my apartment while they are installing the carpet. They will be using no glue or hot irons. A bird store told me he had to be out of the house for two to three days. One avian vet tech said as long as there was no glue and I blocked the bottom of the door with a wet towel, it was safe for him to stay. Another vet tech said I should probably get him out while it was installed but that he could come back right after. Online it seems that people are suggesting he can't be anywhere near my house for days or weeks. Any insight would be appreciated. I don't really have anywhere for him to go barring expensive boarding but I also don't want to risk his life.

Hmm... This is one of those things like, to use Teflon or not to use Teflon since it's only toxic when heated up to 500 degrees, kind of things.

I'm no expert, but personally, I'd board him overnight at the minimum if I could afford it. 24 hours usually gives it enough time to get a large dosage of air toxins out. Then I'd follow the wet towel at the bottom of the door approach and open your door to the hall as little as possible. But that's just me.

I'd be worried about the degassing that occurs for a few days to weeks after installation. I'd probably find somewhere to keep him for a while until that was over with.

But I'm no expert and have been known to be overly cautious before.
