Budgies, Parakeet, Linolated?

Whats the difference between a budgie, parakeet and linolated parakeet?

My 10 year old has a cockatiel. And shes okay with sitting on her shoulder while she does homework and such. Now my son and other daughter want their own. So I'm wondering if I should get 2 more tiels for them and can keep them all in one larger cage, or try a parakeet of some kind. My son is 8 and my daughter 9.

Parakeet is the term they use to disceibe anything from budgies to alexandrines. A budgie is a type of parakeet. If your other kids want one I think you should get a cockatiel because they are the biggest so you don't have to be as gentle with them. Budgies are very fragile and I find them hard to hold on to if you have to catch them(if they aren't tame) because they are so small you don't want to apply too much pressure but at the same time you don't want them to wriggle out of your hands.
My vote goes to cockatiels.

Hm, but then the cockatiels are less likely to be tame if all kept in the same cage as they would tend to bond with each other rather than the humans

If all the cockatiels are tame and they get lots of daily interaction they should be fine. I put my two gcc's together and they are fine.

If they are all hand fed and well socialized I think any of those birds would be a great choice for your kids! If you are limited to pet store birds then I would go with a cockatiel or a linnie.

Budgies aren't truly parakeets. The term is parakeet is loosely used, but budgies belong to their own genus. Budgies have more of a tendency to be aggressive than cockatiels, especially the females, while cockatiels tend to be more mellow. That's not to say that budgies aren't great birds. I know the least about linnies, but I've heard good things. All o fthose species sound like appropriate choices. Good luck in what every you choose!

I avoid pet store birds at all cost I would prefer to find rehomes, even if it means we have to tame them before the kids can play with them. We kinda had to tame the cockatiel we have now.. she was pretty skiddish but is great now.

Do they all pretty much have the same bite? Our cockatiel has no bite to speak of. Is it the same with all tiels?

My 11 year old daughter has two cockatiels they are babies and are in the same cage. It is my understanding that cockatiels are one of the few birds that can be caged together and still stay just as attached to their humans. My 14 year old has a linnie. They are both (or all three) wonderful birds! We have had the linnie for about a year now and we just recently got the cockatiels. The little linnie is adorable and will allow you to do just about anything with her. She loves to snuggle, shower, play! Great little bird in a little package, on the rare occasion that she has bitten it is a mean little bite, it hurts! She is small but mighty! Luckily she bites very rarely and mostly because she doesn't want to go back into her cage once she is out and playing with us! The new cockatiel babies are amazing! I am in love! I have always said that I was more of a bigger bird lover however these little boys have truly changed this! We were waiting for the lutino to be weaned and come home, while waiting there was a cockatiel baby returned to the breeder due to an assumed attack from the family dog. He came to us with no tail at all and missing feathers from one side of his face and the back of his neck. Well even after all that he has been through he is the most loving friendly little guy ever! I just love him! I am hoping that the lutino (the one we were originally waiting for) will become more "cuddly". He is very skittish and doesn't seem as loving! He is very young however and we are working on it! Sorry for the wrong post but I would vote for the cockatiel! I am finding them to be such amazing little birds!

Do they all pretty much have the same bite? Our cockatiel has no bite to speak of. Is it the same with all tiels?

I had a cockatiel that would bite and hang on until he drew blood! He was an extreme rescue case though so I can understand why he bit so hard. I've been bitten by some of my breeder budgies while doing nail trims and it definitely doesn't feel good but it's never drawn blood or anything. None of my hand raised budgies have ever bitten me hard enough to actually cause any pain though. And I've never been bitten by a linnie so I don't know what they're bite is like. I think any hookbill can bite pretty hard if they really want to, I never knew tiels could bite so hard until I got that rescue, his bite was terrible for such a small bird!

Linnies are not also true parakeets, they have short tails like other parrots. My linnies also only try to bite when I try to get them in their cage and they don't want to go, although they are learning not to do this now. I use a perch to get them back in if they are having a hard time. I really don't think linnie bites are bad at all but I don't have anything to compare it to. But they really aren't nippy birds at all, total sweeties. Both of mine have very different personalitiies, one outgoing(jumps all over my son) and one shy and both love to give kisses and cuddle on my shoulder and chest. We are working on scritches but I'm trying to gain their trust since I've only had them since April.

I might have to skip the linnies... I was really hoping to find some for the experience but I cant find any!
