Alice - Galah cockatoo
So there I was, sat twiddling my thumbs in stationary traffic, when I see a flock of birds in the distance, pulling off dramatic twists and turns as they came towards me. Starlings often roost in the trees on the central reservation, so I assumed it was them, but as they came closer realized they had long tails and falcon like wings and saw flashes of green, then it struck me: ring necks! The flock pulled off a final dive that brought them within a few feet of the car, then they settled into the small trees that the starling usually favour. I wound the window down and listened to them calling to each other before having to move on.

I knew we had a local flock - a friend gets them on his allotment every now and they are occasionally sighted in the local park, but it was the first time I've been up close and personal with them. I was astonished how acrobatic they were, and how loud the flock was! So an exiting end to the day...

How exciting! I would love to see something besides magpies and sparrows.

That certainly would be exciting seeing a flock of "wild" (rather, feral) ringnecks! Of course many Australians see large flocks of cockatoos etc. The people we bought our eccy pair off allowed their beautiful galah to "free fly". Well, about a month ago, he kept going, with the flocks of galahs and corellas common around that town ( about 500km from mine).

That would be awesome to see. We have flocks of Nanday Conures and Quaker parrots around here. Love to watch them and listen to them communicating with each other.
