Quakers are in NZ! So Chuffed!!
So are conures, the maroon bellied variety.
What would you choose and why? I'm fully struggling with who will be joining the family next?

i would choose a blue quaker because I already have a conure although I think the gcc are a little more fun to watch play.

I think that quakers have the MOST ANNOYING CALL of all the smaller birds .. it's like nails on a chalkboard to me ... go with a GCC or MBC -- a word of caution though, all three of these birds tend to be a bit nippy ... I have seen quakers lunge (almost drew blood on Christy) and I am sure that GCC and MBC can lunge with the best of them too ... let me say this also, our GCC isn't a cuddler, there aren't many scritches that he will accept, except on his terms ... but, he's still cute anyway ..

lol tex you have a sun, and you mention the quakers call? lol
Oh its sooo hard.
Maybe one of each? Hubby would love that :)

see, a suns call is two tone ... I have gotten used to it, it's not bad at all, really, a quaker has like 4 tones to it, it really hurts my ears ... ... I really can't stand it.

Thats actually really good to know, considering you have a sun and all. Thank you :) I'm leaning towards the maroon bellied conure. I'm just so relieved I came on these forums before buying the cockatoo when I first wanted one :) Research does pay off, and in the meantime we have been blessed with two awesome we birds.
Do MBC's use their feet to do stuff? I've been told Big parrot/small belly :)

The conure that my caregiver has uses his feet.

When it comes to Conures, especially conures from the Ara Tinga (aratinga solaria, [sun conures] aratinga jendaya [Jenday conures]) you should really be thinking Mini-Macaw ... infact "ara" means mini, and "tinga" means Macaw in Latin ... I would say that conures in general can be macaw-esque in their behaviors.

I have a bay quaker,about 31/2 months old,ony have had him about 2 weeks,
He does have a bot of a squal but also he gets wound and dsounds like a litterof pup, thats cute little whine when there about to stave hehe and calling mommy,
He is still deciding how often he wants to "up",he ddoes but not as much as I would like,oh well still learning. He has learned to make kissy noices. How long does it take for them to start picking up words? When I come in from outside I say "Mommy home" at bedtime when covering I tell him Nite Nite, then talk to him all day,of cource up when I want him to come on hand

Let us know how your parrot turns out. ;) Assuming your still getting the blue bellied one.

I had to do a double take, other than Tex I didn't recognize anyone, then realized the thread was almost 3 years old .....lol

Yeah and its confusing enough just being me! :32:......lol

 3 years old? That is annoying! I'm going to start looking at the date at the top of posts...........
