COVID-19 Virus

The lending rate for money is pretty much zero is it 0.5%, free money at the moment, so likelihood is the money isn't in the pot, its adding to the national debt. Heavier handcuffs to who ever is lending this money. I haven't a clue who that may be though....

And I agree on a lot of your socialist views, in particular in respect to the older generations and growing numbers of homeless people. Many years ago there used to be a saying in the uk that a society should be judged on its ability to help the vunerable. A saying that should be reintroduced globally these days I feel.

Oh but it gets better! In about 2012 or so our then government introduced something called the National Disability Insurance Scheme (the NDIS). The idea being that *anyone* unfortunate enough to have been born with any kind of disability or acquiring one through illness or accident could get government funding to provide for their needs for life. Brilliant idea I hear you say! And it would have been if successive governments hadn’t kept moving the goalposts and making it more difficult and onerous to access. It is currently being overseen by an ex-bank CEO (one of our “Big Four” banks) and a bunch of his cronies who ensure that the NDIS coffers remain full and that applicants are made to wait for years for funding to be approved. When funding is finally approved it is doled out with an eye-dropper. I know this because my last job was with a disability service provider. Plus the current government has raised penny-pinching to a high art form solely so it could go to the last election with the budget in surplus, regardless of how many worthy causes were cut off from funding along the way. Even then it wasn’t quite in surplus but was made to look like it almost was through some highly creative massaging of numbers!

If anything I’m a “small-s” socialist (and a CAPITAL LETTER TROUBLE-MAKER :) ) but having been a witness to the “sod you Jack, I’m alright” attitudes clearly on display from the wealthy in this country over the past few years as they enrich themselves at the expense of everyday Aussies I’ve begun to despair!

See this in the UK too, I think we have the wealth split at one of the highest in the world, as in 0.0001% whatever of the population hold 99.9999% whatever of the wealth, and probably more food banks :(

Don’t you worry, I will!

To date the Australian federal government has committed $217 billion to the national COVID-19 response, plus plenty more from all the State governments.

What was that I said earlier about those money trees??

Is it coming to an end every where? forget the big numbers, its the trend we should concentrate on, it looks like globally the numbers are following each other, considering every country took different actions at different times with differing levels of resources, does this mean its a 'natural' life cycle for this virus?

Look at this site, pretty much every country is showing a downward slope for new cases over the last few days. Fingers crossed..
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries

The U.S. is still bracing for a wave, anticipating between 100K and 200K fatalities. I am certain some of the media buzz is biased towards flattening the curve, yet NYC is inundated with Chicago and New Orleans on the cusp. The gateway of Washington State is closest to recovery mode. Strict social distancing in my state of California may avert the worst.

Yet there are outliers eager to continue close social contact, sure to metastasize within their ranks. Unfortunately they are silent shedders of the virus during an incubation period.

Most if the country still has backlogged tests. We started drive thru testing ten days ago, we don't even have the first days tests back yet. Plus we limit the number of tests done each day still....
Florida releases the new cases at noon and 7 pm, we still going up by 1000 cases every day, and like mentioned we are sitting on a backlog of tests in the thousands....
Also a true downward trends you have to wait 2 weeks from your last highest spike, as 2 week incubation period, to see if trend is real.....

Hi Scott,

Social distancing seems to be key here, we where told that 100k's where likely to perish in the UK too, the current prediction has dropped to 5k in the last few days. Its not the end of things, but maybe the end of the start..

Italy overall is seeing a drop in new cases but the south of Italy is still growing, have they done the isolation thing, I don't know, but it may suggest its not a warming weather seasonal thing.

Agreed, 2 weeks before we can really start believing in the downward trend, but its a ray of hope and im taking it!

Question on the tests as its something that doesn't happen in the uk unless you are a health worker, the prime minister or you are entering in to the hospital with acute issues, does it specifically test for covid-19 or just 'generic' coronavirus please?

Thank you, for providing me a reminder of why I had long ago stopped read The Atlantic! They far too commonly write to put their readers sound asleep! That article could have been summed with in a couple of useful paragraphs.

The only positive point was the correct description of this Virus: SARS-C6 V-2.

I'm not criticizing you, its the painful writing style of the The Atlantic that I'm criticizing...

Thanks! Terrifying article, buy covers a lot of pandemic long-term outlooks...
Hopefully the world changes for the better after this, that we realize we are all in this life together, one planet.....

We got a slow start but we have been doing amazing things.

If the masses could buy into the importance of staying home, social isolation, that buy staying home we really are changing the course of this diseases and buying time.

Well it certainly seems to be the case that the uk has *finally* got the message, it took its time but it seems people have now got it, im seeing photos of motorways (our interstate's? (but smaller of course ;))) with literally nobody on them. I have seen a few people walking dogs to day and that is it, 2 people and 2 dogs. This seems to be the case across the country and a growing look after each other society seems to be emerging..... there always be the few exceptions though

News conference with task force, man everyone Is stepped up! But terrifying the lengths we are having to go to.
If you look at worldometer Coronavirus.
Nearly every single country in the world is reported multiple deaths today... Overwhelmed

My GF came down with it last night. Spoken loads to her today. It seems to come on in waves with her and over an hour I can sense the differences and keep getting her to check temps. Worrying times indeed and as a 52yr old life long smoking diabetic I'm glad I made the decision to isolate from her 10 days ago. As I did with my kids 7 days ago who are with their mother.

Life sucks at the moment, it's only enzo who continues to make my heart melt

Has she been tested? Or is she symptomatic?

I'm sorry, hope she recovers swiftly as the odds are greatly in her favor. Take care of yourself, give Enzo hugs. We're here for you!

I'm very sorry to hear this. I'm very glad you are social isolate..I pray she is one of the mild cases. Much love to you all.

It's time to buckle down on the isolation.

My concern with going for walks, visiting parks, going golfing , useing a public boat ramp to launch your boat.
Listen, the virus can stay airborne a minium of 3 hours, if you walk through a space that someone else walked through within the 3 hour ,( likely more) time you are getting exposed to the virus. There are reports that the virus can hitch a ride on pollen, on dust, on air pollution, there by statistics alof in the air longer. Also as we have all seen can stay viable on surfaces for days. So you can touch stuff or pick up on your shoes.

Is 6 feet far enough stay away from people, doubtful, see above. Also MIT is now saying 27 feet.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...esearcher-lydia-bourouiba-27-feet/5091526002/

Let's talk masks. Frontline people need them most. But now CDC is talking about how masks could be help. A N95 mask filters out 95% of virus particles. That has to improve your odds, of passing if you are asymptomatic , or catching if someone else is. Sure there are mistakes you can make that render the mask less effective, and or i crease your odds of catching........China has been saying to all who will listen to wear a mask for all people who leave their house. I haven't sited the source but you can do your own searching for those articles.

Other types of masks are much more permeable to the virus particles. But again they can limit your respiratory droplets if you have the virus and are asymptomatic, lessoning your chance of spreading the virus to others..

CDC has said if you wear contacts stop, and switch to glasses. Also eyes are a mucus membranes. So wearing glasses if you have to go out, had to help.

For me , if I have to go out, I'm taking a full shower when I get home. That way if virus particle in the air get trapped in my hair, I can wash them away. Same reason I chsnge and wah my clothes.

Also now plunty of doctors and others have spoken if removing outer package of groceries or this GS brought home. And Wash off everything else, or transfer to a Ziploc bag, or other storage.

I just want us all as safe as possible, and to interrupt the spread if the virus from person to person, and from fomites to person.

So many people, and corporation are stepping up to help the fight to stop this virus. We are all really Uniting to fight this, it's wonderful to see.

This is a very clear explanation of the progression of the illness! My daughter died from ARDS! And this was not during a flood of similar cases!
A frightening point, we have already exceeded this doctor’s expectations of where we stand as a country(USA)!
