Oh boy, that's reassuring (sarcasm). Siiiigh, this is so incredibly stressful. ���� And none of our family members so far seem to be taking this seriously. I am just so worried about them! At this point they all know they are welcome to come here, we have even BEGGED them to come here. But at this point if/when any of them show up we will have to quarantine them. Lucky us that this property has 2 mobile homes and a hunting "cabin". Oh this is awful. I hope I look like a complete overreacting fool soon, but I fear that I will not. ��


Eta: sister in law in Shanghai, brother and sister in law in chicago, aunt and co in rhode island, other aunt and co in the Atlanta metro area, everyone else within 10 miles of downtown DC. Siiiiigh. All except RI folks and some of the georgia folks are in the city.

Honestly, it is stressing me out a lot too. I teach and the population I work with is mostly uninsured...A kid LITERALLY spat in my face yesterday (on-purpose/out of anger--and it hit my lips, eye-lid and cheek) and that kind of thing happens pretty often (mostly accidental, but sometimes deliberate)...Add to that, the fact that school nurses seem to be the world's biggest skeptics, as it seems that there is TREMENDOUS pressure to keep kids in school all day (even if vomiting, bed bugs, or lice are present--oh and 99.5 is pretty much not even considered a fever by them, even though it should be my medical standards)....Oh yeah, and half of the time, when you call parents, they don't ever come get their kid, so guess who gets to exposed? EVERYONE..

PS--- If I see another adult coughing into his/her hands, I may have to freaking say something....Unless you have a back brace, there is NO REASON not to cough into your elbow...YES...GREAT YOU COVERED YOUR COUGH....NOW GO TOUCH EVERYTHING WITH THOSE SAME HANDS---we are talking college-educated folks making mistakes that a 4th grader could identify..

I think we should rember that though this is new virus, and unknown effects, it hasn't yet reached what we face each season here I

Noodles, that's so gross. And people should practice better etiquette with coughing and sneezing...ugh
My hospital were I have to go to monthly treatment, last month the nurse was wearing a mask. I asked why, she said she had a cold! I asked why are you still working, and she said they aren't allowed off. I told her I wanted a different nurse. As with myasthenia gravis, if I get a cold , I get put on a ventilator, because of week diaphragm muscles. I couldn't believe it!

Big variable is whether the Novel Coronavirus will mutate over time and spread exponentially. So far seems to act similar to influenza. Which segues to one of my peeves....

What we call the "flu" is more properly known as Influenza. A scourge of humankind has killed untold millions and globally claims up to 650,000 per year. There were three pandemics last century; 1918, 1957, 1968, and one in 2009. We are coincidentally in the midst of "flu season" so diagnostic tools are needed when in doubt.

Statistically, this is likely to be a regional threat and well contained in nations with robust public health systems. Unknown (AFAIK) is whether the traditional flu vaccine provides a halo benefit against N.C. While it is not one of the strains in the vaccine, folks who are inoculated tend to experience milder symptoms and recover faster if stricken with another variant of the flu.

If memory serves, Scott has one of those Big Plane License, so at least we will be comfortable -- well, as comfortable as mass transit aircraft allow...

Hey, my mom and I are on board for Antarctica! Haha when I told her your plan I used a bit of colorful language.. Let me see if I can clean it up a bit(it was funny).


Me: [...] Confirmed cases in every single habitated continent. Lets all move to antarctica. Hang out with the walruses and penguins and [poop].

Me: Awful long way to go from antarctica just to poo in [her home town].




Anyway, those poor people at Chewy!! They emailed me that my order needed verification, and just when I was coming to use my husband's phone to call(his number is on the order), they called him to clarify.



Hahahaha. Big order shipped from a new account to an address they have shipped to before(rescue friend gets biig donation orders from chewy some times), put on the credit card of a male with a different billing address(PO box), and the account was made in my name(under my middle name) and the email on the order was one of my .edu emails using my first name. Hahaha, and my husband's phone number still has a Maryland area code. Had to verify cc#, address(es), explain that we know [rescue lady] and that our place is behind someone else's from the road(very rural), and that our PO box won't accept an order of hundreds of pounds of bird food. Much needed morning laugh. Thanked her for needing verification, there were a lot of unusual things with the order, to the point that when we placed it last night we figured there would be some issues with it.



So the bird food should be here tomorrow or tuesday at the latest. Now we are off to town for a few remaining supplies. All we will need after today is to pick up the chewy order, pick up packages, get firewood and livestock feed. We even had the farrier come out for Mr. Butters yesterday so we wont have to worry about his feet for a while. With any luck everything will work out and we just won't need to go shopping for a while. But in case things go in a bad way, we shouldn't have to run to the store for any last minute supplies. PHEW. And also then we will be 2 fewer people cluttering up the stores when/if others need to get supplies.

I read this in the Los Angeles Time's
"Residents, medical staff and relatives of those who are ill or have died in Hubei province are demanding help. Stories of family members stricken with coronavirus symptoms who died without being diagnosed reverberate through Chinese social media, raising suspicions that the government is underreporting the number of those infected."

I thought I had read the CDC had some rapid tests it could do, with results in hours. So when will find out if any of the 200 in March Air Base quarantined, are found positive????

Placed an order for 100 lbs red millet, 100 lbs white millet, 50 lbs oat groats, and 100 lbs of canary grass seed(they might not be able to get this one). Between that and what we ordered from Chewy our feathered fatties should be fiiiiiiiiine like wine. Should be here tuesday. Now off to 30 miles away to go actually into town for supplies.

There are stupid males in this World that are weak and commonly beat women... That in my viewpoint is toxic.

Boats, my friend, you have never displayed anything like toxic masculinity here and I would not apply that label to you-guns or no, and I meant no offense. THIS forum isn’t filled with that kind of men. The gun forum seems to have a higher percentage. Also *most* gun owners have different political alignments than I do and that’s not a forbidden topic over there so I don’t really enjoy a lot of the posts-despite being united by our common love of our weapons (I have a Glock 29, a cute little .38 special, and a Walther PPQ22).

Here, in contrast, while we are also united by a common love, this is a kinder, gentler forum and none of the men here need to prove how manly they are and all are comfortable sharing their deep love for their birds and even crying with us when we lose one of our beloved flock members.

This forum, consequently, is where I chose to spend my time.

Plus with how many mouths we have to feed. Teeny mouths, but nearly 50 of them! And I am grateful to have each and every single one. The amount of stress relief they give us is truely profound. Even when they are being little twerps. Every time Alex hisses at me, my heart sighs with stress relief


Back from town. All of the rest of the shopping we will do will be from the town only 7 miles away or online. We still need to go to the farther away town to clear things out of a storage locker(family heirlooms from my grandmother's house. We both would feel better with them here rather than in a storage cubby thing if things do "go south"). We figure going and unloading a storage locker is relatively low risk though since we won't have to directly interact with anyone.



It was quite upsetting paying attention to all the people coughing.... only SOME bothered to SOMETIMES cough into their hands Geeeze. But as Hubbs pointed out, these are mountain folks. They don't get vaccinated against ANYTHING, especially not the flu, so of course they are sick. Plus, not even all of them can read/write. So good coughing etiquette is not exactly widespread(unlike the flu). Even if we get looked at funny I think we will wear surgical masks in public during flu season from now on. Of course, for now we are semi isolating ourselves.



Good/sad news is the person considering adopting one of the dogs we are looking to rehome decided to adopt another dog, so we are NOT driving to Louisville tomorrow for a meet and greet. Too bad for Chance, but probably safer to avoid travel as much as possible. We have been "fostering" her for over a year at this point, what is a little longer? No big deal.

I'm not downplaying the seriousness of this coronavirus, as any virus is a serious matter, but tens of thousands are hospitalized or die each year in the US and world-wide from the flu yet I've not seen the fear about that compared to the fear being shown this new virus. It's symptoms are very similar to the flu. It is now known a person not showing any symptoms can unknowingly have it and can pass it on. Why does the yearly flu not seem to elicit as much concern as coronavirus, when it is just as deadly.

The regular flu doesn't cross human-animal lines and this virus is is a member of a viral family that is notoriously deadly and prone to mutations--- more than the standard flu---the risk is not so much due to the current symptoms, but the potential for rapid spread through thousands of people which leads to viral transformations.

A friend told me China is still exporting products, and her boyfriend who works as a manager in the food section at Walmart is very worried about that. She said she didn't think she had seen him so paranoid about this. Couldn't the virus come in on products such as food and clothing?

From what I understand, the surface survival is less of a concern if the shipping takes 5+ days, but 2 day shipping from China could be an issue.
