COVID-19 Virus

Re: Wuhan virus

I think in order not to cause fear, we have not gotten the message out on the seriousness of this virus.

We need to see news updated to say USA is at all most 5,000 cases! That's with little testing so far.

That 20% will not be fine! They will need hospital or ICU care for weeks. That behind them will be the next newly infected 20% , that will need hospital care and ICU, it will snowball! We already have many of our own doctors in critical condition! More doctors and nurses will be taken out of the equation, by illness, death, or quarantine!

But we can all make a difference and stop this. The President on the advice of CDC and NIH , asked America to stay in, to isolate, to avoid eating out ( food prep people could be without symptoms but infected and passing it on) to gather in groups of 10 or less! These are never in our lifetime guidance!! Listen make your family and friends and neighbors listen! America, the world, we can change that! And to save America we don't have to go to war, all we have to do is stay in!!!!!!!

Please, work to share the information on the 20% that are not fine!

Reach out on your Facebook, and social media platforms. Text and call your freinds and family. Talk to people. We have to follow guidance, we have to make a difference in these numbers .

Re: Wuhan virus

MY BROTHER IS LEAVING CHICAGO!!!! :D only "heading to the burbs" but I'll take what I can get!!!!

Just the other day he sent me a private text thanking me for urging our older family member to take this seriously and urging them to leave the city, but really what was the danger to him and his domestic partner? He is 31 and she is 28 so it poses no more threat than a cold or flu, right? I went ahead and educated him. I hope they take this seriously enough!!!!

Re: Wuhan virus

My governer tho is saying it is everyone's "patriotic duty" to A) order take out so the restaraunts don't go out of business(closed to in person dining), and B) to not hoard supplies that others may need. Just get enough for that week is what he is asking. .... but the CDC says TO stock up.

MIL still just thinks it is "funny" that the grocery store shelves are bare. And she is only in her mid sixties so she is not "really" in the danger range. FIL is taking it a BIT more seriously, but he and his wife are still mocking the whole situation and think that they will be coming for a 2 day visit at the end of april. Total denial. :( he laughed at our concern on the last phone call and called himself a "spring chicken". he is in his 70's.... Hubbs and I are worried. we don't have kids yet, but when we do we want them to have a grandfather....

Ugh.

Re: Wuhan virus

I fear the time to "stock up" is largely past.

When I moved up to the High Desert of So.Cal I purchased 6 months of freeze dried food (for 2). The San Andreas fault is just a few miles from where I live.

I have never been able to really stock up ahead of time for our Fids. Pellets should have a reasonable shelf life and I have quit a bit but seed is problematic.
Plus fresh food can only be kept a short time.
The larger birds share what we eat (when it's safe for them to do so) so I think I can keep them eating for a time.

Still being told to report to work. beyond that I can't comment on how my employer is handling the situation.

Re: Wuhan virus

Prayers for the health care workers of the world.

Italy: COVID-19 has infected 2,629 health workers, or 8.3% of the total (more than twice the percentage in China), as of yesterday March 17 [source]. In Bergamo (Lombardy region), 118 out of about 600 family doctors (20%) have been infected, and a 65-year-old doctor has died [source]. Today, a 57-year-old doctor has died: he was the secretary of the Federation of General Practitioners of Lodi [source]. A week ago, a 67-year-old family doctor, president of the Varese Medical Association, had died [source]

Re: Wuhan virus

I saw that too. We're in this for the long haul. But the upside is, if we do maintain this level of lockdown for 18 months or however long it takes to devolop a vaccine, we will be saving millions of lives. I think it is well worth the trade off. We do this so to protect millions of our parents and grandparents, coworkers and friends. As my governer keeps saying, we will get thru this together. It is going to suck for a while, but we can do this. We simply cannot allow this to spread thru our communities!

It breaks my heart that my mom has to go thru this alone. I wish she had come here a month ago. Sigh, I'm so worried about her!! Touched base with some extended family yesterday. They seem to be hunkering down. My cousin works for UPS tho, which is an essential business, so he is still on the job. He lives in the same house as my 60's aunt and uncle. This is scary but I'm sure he is being careful not to expose them.

To expand on this point; This Virus will be around for a very long time...
As is common with near all Viruses, they never really go away, they sit waiting to infect a non-immunized or non-resistant body. Hence, why we continue to see the return of Viruses long deemed over-come, including 'sadly' childhood Viruses.

The reality is, the World and North America are at least 10 to 18 months prior to having a safe drug to immunize our elderly and those most likely to suffer deeply from this Virus.

At this point, there is great 'hope' that this Virus will be seasonal in its activity, which means that with the heat of Summer and the great increase in strong, bright sunlight, which has a long history of greatly slowing or limited elimination such Viruses. That said, the worst case would be no seasonal effect and it returning in waves as this Virus alters itself and flows back across the population.

It is very important to understand, that as of this point, the medical, technical and scientists have yet to find an individual that is 'naturally resistant' to this Virus. This states that the vast majority of the population is not resistant and therefore open to becoming infected.

Re: Wuhan virus

I predict heroic actions to develop a safe and effective vaccine will be successful in record time. So we are in a race to safeguard life while brilliant science works in overdrive. First stage trials with humans have begun. The trick will be to produce a cocktail of strains effective against potential mutations.

They are being amazing fast!

Meanwhile, I wish I his data could have been released sooner.......as Florida is over run with huge crowds of college kids taking advantage of school closing

Younger Adults Comprise Big Portion of Coronavirus Hospitalizations in U.S.

New C.D.C. data showed that nearly 40 percent of patients sick enough to be hospitalized were aged 20 to 54. But the risk of dying was significantly higher in older people.
