COVID-19 Virus

Re: Wuhan virus

Just took some time to plant some hens and chicks cuttings, as well as some young hardy fig trees. Will also take some time to make rat food, clean cages and rearrange the bird cage furniture. The local broadcast has been playing really creepy covid 19 commercials at nearly every break for days. Tv, internet, etc are all sources of stress. Make sure to make time to walk away from all of them each and every day, and do something you enjoy. Mental health is every bit as important as physical.

How is everyone feeling mental-health wise today? Right now I am good, but usually I get stressed in the afternoons/evenings.

Re: Wuhan virus

The latest that I have heard on the news today is that a loss of smell and taste even without other symptoms can be a precursor. They have noticed this in Italy. If you have this you are supposed to be infectious..... self isolate is the advice here.

Re: Wuhan virus

@Bill, pretty sure that wasn't COVID-19. Check this out:

A medical worker describes terrifying lung failure from COVID-19 – even in his young patients

As of Friday, Louisiana was reporting 479 confirmed cases of COVID-19, one of the highest numbers in the country. Ten people had died. The majority of cases are in New Orleans, which now has one confirmed case for every 1,000 residents.

"Reading about it in the news, I knew it was going to be bad, but we deal with the flu every year so I was thinking: Well, it's probably not that much worse than the flu. But seeing patients with COVID-19 completely changed my perspective, and it's a lot more frightening.

I have patients in their early 40s and, yeah, I was kind of shocked. I'm seeing people who look relatively healthy with a minimal health history, and they are completely wiped out, like they've been hit by a truck. This is knocking out what should be perfectly fit, healthy people. Patients will be on minimal support, on a little bit of oxygen, and then all of a sudden, they go into complete respiratory arrest, shut down and can't breathe at all.

"We have an observation unit in the hospital, and we have been admitting patients that had tested positive or are presumptive positive – these are patients that had been in contact with people who were positive. We go and check vitals on patients every four hours, and some are on a continuous cardiac monitor, so we see that their heart rate has a sudden increase or decrease, or someone goes in and sees that the patient is struggling to breathe or is unresponsive. That seems to be what happens to a lot of these patients: They suddenly become unresponsive or go into respiratory failure."

With our coronavirus patients, once they're on ventilators, most need about the highest settings that we can do. About 90% oxygen, and 16 of PEEP, positive end-expiratory pressure, which keeps the lung inflated. This is nearly as high as I've ever seen. The level we're at means we are running out of options.

"In my experience, this severity of ARDS is usually more typical of someone who has a near drowning experience – they have a bunch of dirty water in their lungs – or people who inhale caustic gas. Especially for it to have such an acute onset like that. I've never seen a microorganism or an infectious process cause such acute damage to the lungs so rapidly. That was what really shocked me."

"It first struck me how different it was when I saw my first coronavirus patient go bad. I was like, Holy ****, this is not the flu. Watching this relatively young guy, gasping for air, pink frothy secretions coming out of his tube and out of his mouth. The ventilator should have been doing the work of breathing but he was still gasping for air, moving his mouth, moving his body, struggling. We had to restrain him. With all the coronavirus patients, we've had to restrain them. They really hyperventilate, really struggle to breathe. When you're in that mindstate of struggling to breathe and delirious with fever, you don't know when someone is trying to help you, so you'll try to rip the breathing tube out because you feel it is choking you, but you are drowning.

"When someone has an infection, I'm used to seeing the normal colors you'd associate with it: greens and yellows. The coronavirus patients with ARDS have been having a lot of secretions that are actually pink because they're filled with blood cells that are leaking into their airways. They are essentially drowning in their own blood and fluids because their lungs are so full. So we're constantly having to suction out the secretions every time we go into their rooms."

Re: Wuhan virus

Definitely seeing an increase in cases in my county, so its really starting to feel close to home. 14 cases, and 2 deaths in the county this week. My county isn’t very populated so I guess that’s why it feels close. Kind of wish I could stay home from work....puttering in my yard and avoiding people sounds very appealing right now!

Re: Wuhan virus

New data emerging!
50% of cases develop viral pneumoia!
" Younger adults, previously healthy people and some children develop viral pneumonia. Although prior reports suggested that 80% of people got only mild disease, it now appears that about half of these people, despite not needing hospital admission, have moderately severe pneumonia, which can take weeks or longer to recover from."

So 30% mild, 50% viral pneumoia weeks to get over, 20% hospitalized......darn..

Re: Wuhan virus

So interestingly enough I was at a hotel in January and started sneezing and getting stuffed up but otherwise feeling good. I got home and the sneezing subsided but I was getting a dry throat and stilly stuffy. I went into the doc suspecting that I was getting the flu and was hoping to get that flu shot that you need to take within 48hrs of symptoms only to be told, maybe because I told them about what I perceived as an allergic reaction, that I simply had post nasal drip which was causing the symptoms I had. I went home ad was told to keep up with taking vitamin c, and to use Flonase (generic). After a week the symptoms mostly subsided. I'm still using the Flonase.

I never felt sick but I wonder if I had a case of it.

Clearly, you had been suffering the well-known Avian Missmyparrots Virus, a serious illness known to cause like responses! You're lucky you got home in time, as a couple of more days, and you would have had seriously watering eyes!!!

One should always carry a series of flight and tail feathers to inhale from a ziplock bag, plus numerous photos... Man, your had been really lucky this time!!! :D

Re: Wuhan virus

At least 87 confirmed in Kentucky. Our 3rd death was a 67 year old man. 1 case in our county of under 6500.

Great advice! Birdie time is my escape from all of this stuff. It's otherwise all consuming. It's every conversation, all we see on the news and social media, and for me, my entire work day as well. We own a small, community, independent pharmacy, one of the "essential businesses* so at least I still get to work, but sick people go to the pharmacy to get their meds. We deliver to folks who can't or shouldn't be going out to get them. No charge. It's the right thing to do.

Our governor has decided that since hand sanitizer is impossible to find now, that on top of everything else we do, pharmacists should compound and sell it. Not difficult, but time consuming, and the raw ingredients are also becoming harder to find. We keep selling out as fast as we can make it. We're relatively cheap on the price, because I refuse to gouge my local community. We're here to help people. That's the basis of our business philosophy. Again, it's just the right thing to do.

Anyway, i have mostly avoded this thread just because I wanted a break from the virus extravaganza. It's a nightmare for everyone on every level. I feel for everyone who is affected by this whole thing, in whatever form.

With all that said, everyone should go snuggle, scratch, pet, talk to, or do whatever you do to spend quality time with your feathered kids. Right now!!! They make everything better. Baxter is currently snuggled up against my neck sleeping as I write this. And all is right with the world... if only just for a moment.

Stay safe and healthy my friends.

Re: Wuhan virus

My State is 734 now I think...45 around me.

Originally my state health department decided not to release to the public the first 6 cases!!! We had positive cases for long time. Then when the US blew up with cases they admit we had those six but have never released what county. Then I noticed they would not included cases of people who tested positive her and were treated in our hospital if they weren't Florida residents. Something that would be released but not in official state counts.. well other people noticed some other fishy stuff.... ( Just why??)
"There's Something Strange About Florida's Coronavirus Data"

I did have fever and cough, then weeze that's finely gone away ( talked about earlier in thread) I hope I did have it, and that I don't get again....been staying away from my mom and dad who are late 70s... :( Even missed my mom bday just to be safe..

I had lots of parrot snuggles today! Had my hair fixed by two different parrots ;)!

Re: Wuhan virus

Please note an editorial policy effective with new posts. COVID-19 has elicited a number of nicknames, several clearly offensive resulting in edits by the mod team. We are not a medical journal and technical precision is unneeded, however anything associated with ethnicity, nation, culture, or otherwise untoward is prohibited and will be deleted. Thread was initially entitled "Wuhan" for geographical location and is acceptable.

Please continue posting unabated save for injurious expressions! Thank you!!!

Re: Wuhan virus

Ok folks
We added almost 7,000 cases today, we are 3rd in the world now! China, Italy, USA!
And everything I read said we are at least ten times that! As we race to catch up on testing.
Please take every precautions, please consider that your home town has cases,

Someone asked me why do I post? Because I have a big heart, and it hurts me how this started out, how the info was limited, thst in order to suppress fear, we supressed facts.
Most people are busy, they aren't taking time to dig, and even now with all the media attention, the scope and direness isn't reaching all.

The President asked us to stay home, to not travel, to limit our exposure to groups if ten, to stay off beaches.... Yet my state closed most beaches but not ours, so today the highway backed up as people flocked to the beach , our town was flooded with people leaving spring break from the south of the state , stopping to enjoy the Sunshine at our beach, by the thousands!!!! With a virus that can stay airborne for hours by science reports , that can stay days on surfaces...how many touched the wood hand rail down the uneven boardwalk to the beach?

We all have to act together and county. Dr. Fauci has said you have to act like it is in your community, because tests just show were it had been, not were it is now.

Tips
If you have to go out, shoes stay outside.
When you get home, change your clothes and put them in the wash and wash them . Whipe down knob, wash hands.
Then take a shower.
Anything you bring from outside, like grocery, clean it. If it has cardboard remove it , and careful repackage. For me I wear gloves, remove outer package, throw out gloves wash hands then repackage, then I take the cardboards outside garbage, and wash hands again....mail I open outside , then toss envelope, and out mail in zip lock...yes I'm high risk, so I take high precaution. We have been told how long it lasts on surfaces...so I take that to heart.

You know I've read it before and believe it more than ever, that this is a bio-weapon engineered to seek and destroy. I've never heard of a virus moving this fast to infect so many within such a short time.

Re: Wuhan virus

Making poison to destroy humans without anti-poison to preventing/curing??? Hard to believe right?

I fear the death in the US will be roughly 15% (of our populations) before finding the cure... **SOB***

I will be laughing myself in hell with my death of this.

As those who have been active regarding read and Posting as part of this Thread know, I have believed that this specific Virus has been weaponized from early-on.

There are several abilities of this Virus that cause one to consider such a belief. One of them is the time line between catching it, shedding it, and feeling ill. This does not exist in the founding Virus as one is ill at the time one starts to shed the Virus.

We are not powerless headless.
Knowledgeable is power. It's a virus that spreads between people, we can take steps. Isolate as possible, clean, take care of body and mind. Plan

While I too have suspicion. I do have to say when moving animals between countries, or institution, we quarantine them for 3 weeks, as many diseases do hide it take time to develop. We tested them on arrival, and prior to release from quarantine. Often animals like people can fight off disease, but when stressed ( like shipping') then they develop the diseaes they might otherwise have faught off.

I want us informed, but I want us also to manage stress. Stress is very hard on ones body. I'm having to manage my stress in this.

Re: Wuhan virus

More proof how this thread has helped many people , to prepare, to take serious the threat.

I heard from a friend , with whome I had relentlessly shared the info contained here. She stocked up on baby formula before the rush. She also relentlessly shared this info with a person in the school system. That person shared the info with their boss. They then took early steps in their school, and reacated quickly when the outbreak happened. She told my friend that information saved lives.

Thanks Bug N Flock for starting this thread. I know I have posted so much in it, but I never would have started this thread! So your thread has prepared people and saved lives!

Re: Wuhan virus

We quarantine our mail. Hubbs goes to post office and with gloves clears po box into trash bag. We bring it home and anything non perishable, live(I have been ordering some plants from ebay), or urgent gets put in an outbuilding. To be opened in 9-14 days. Overkill? You betcha. We gonna change? Nope!

I'm *so* glad this thread has helped people!!!! And thank you so much for posting so much on it, Laura!

Re: Wuhan virus

I'm not going to name names because I don't think I am supposed to, but the federal lab I did research at for a few years before we moved is shut down to all but those needed for "mission critical access". The people I was working with are hunkering down at home(thank God) and avoiding people. The two I was working with directly are older, the one guy in his seventies, the other probably late sixties. I have heard from both of them, and they both seem to be doing ok. Joking about having to put off the wild and crazy scientist parties. ;)

There is hope, as they both reassured me. But hunker in place for now.

Yes, Laura, this Thread would have been far less without you! You have saved members from not being without food, supplies and needed medications!!! Thank You from the bottom of my Heart, My Dear Friend!!!

Regarding the mail, if at all possible stand the letters and packages on an edge to allow access to all flat surfaces. Also, remember that Bright SunLight kills Viruses.

And a Real World use for those solid 'bar' (rod) style UV light sources. Although not as effective as Bright Sunlight, they do have an effect on Viruses, not that I'm recommending buying one! And, please do not use them on your Parrots!

Stay safe!
