Hi guys, I know I disappeared for a few weeks and that is because I got bad news and I have been super upset and angry about it. Well, good news but also bad news. My partner's job is going to require us to relocate to Central America. I am in the process of acquiring a pet passport for my Quaker parrot, but our home is not going to be very big. We certainly won't have the room that a larger bird like a Galah should have. I currently have a $750 deposit on a baby Galah who is set to come home in June, and I don't want to give the money up but I am stuck between a rock and a hard place: Do I go ahead and pay the other $750 and try to get a passport for the Galah and take it to a country where I don't know if I will even have room to keep it in a decent sized cage or do I sacrifice my deposit? I am reaching out to see if anyone was looking to purchase a Galah and would like to take my baby, because I really don't want it to have an uncertain future. I know it is unlikely, but I thought I would try. If not I have a hard decision to make: Go ahead and get my sweet birdie and hope that I can get it to Central America and give it a good life or sacrifice my pet deposit. I also have a brand new double macaw cage not even out of its box from King's Cages that I have to figure out what to do with--I know for a fact that I cannot take IT overseas so I am going to try and sell it to someone local to the Dallas/Fort Worth area since shipping it is such a cost. I am reaching out for help here first since I have met so many people who love birds, in the hopes that someone was looking to get a baby galah and that this might work out well. If not, like I said, difficult decisions. My Quaker is definitely coming with me, but he is a smaller bird who can live in a smaller environment. I don't know what to do. I am in huge distress. Anyway, if you are interested in taking on the baby, please PM me. I cried and cried when I found out about this move, and I am still so upset. I have spent weeks researching taking birds to other countries and trying to contact pet moving services, but traveling with birds and keeping them happy and healthy isn't easy, especially since we will be renting a tiny place in a semi-rural area in a third world country. Anyway, that's all I have to say right now... I am really upset and don't want to type anymore about it, but if you have any interest, let me know.

Wow. That's a tough spot to be in. Why don't you just return the cage?

I'm sorry to hear you're going through so much. Under the circumstances, maybe the breeder would be willing to refund at least part of your deposit.

I hope everything works out for you.

Or the breeder might have a waiting list.

I'm sorry.

What a tough spot to be in. I feel for you on that. As akrrm mentioned, most breeders have a waiting list. Have you talked to the breeder yet?

I'm really sorry to hear this.
But I would check and see if your breeder will work with you. Maybe you are stressing over nothing? (Hope so for you)

Yeah I talked to the breeder and he said I could have the $750 as credit for the future on another bird... But I don't know how long we will be gone and good luck shipping that bird to Honduras! As for the cage, shipping costs and restocking fees would be almost half the cost of the cage. :(

I lived in Central America for many years and rarely ever keep any of the parrots inside the house. Space wasn't really an issue.

He is also offering to give me a blue headed pi instead since it is smaller, but the main problem is that it is SO hard to get birds overseas. Plus it isn't hatched yet, so we would be moved before it is weaned! I may just take my Rosie baby and hope I can get it to Central America... But paperwork and getting things done in these third world countries is a mess!!!

Hi henpecked, we will likely be renting an apartment, not a house. We are going to be living on an island. Plus we are not shipping anything over--we are going to take our things by plane--so I have no clue how to get a large cage.

I feel for you, and I hope the move goes smoothly. It sounds like a pain to do even without birds!
Too bad the breeder will not refund. I'm not surprised though coming from their point of view. ...and to offer the Pionus doesn't make any more sense as they aren't 'so much' smaller that it makes any difference. A large Pi can be about as big as a smaller RB2, so it's obvious the breeder is only focused on not losing money from their end. Good luck with your decision Michelle.

I GOT PICTURES and I want him so much... He is wonderful. I think I will start calling pet stores in Roaton and see what kind of birdcages I can get there. I will also call the vet on Roaton and when we visit to find housing in June I will start asking around about keeping birds there. Maybe there is a way I can still work this out and get my guy. I just want him so badly I got all teary eyed when I saw his little baby pictures.....

He is so precious! I really hope you find a way to keep him

I hope you are not afraid of bugs my sister lived in Costa Rica for a while and wanted me to visit then I saw pics of the spiders and the ants that come through people houses by the hoards and said no thanks! I am kinda a girly girl when it comes to that sort of thing.:o

The baby is adorable and I do hope you can work it out.

I wish that I could take him for you while you are away (you said you live in Dallas -- I am in Austin). But I have too many big birds right now.

Are you looking for a permanent home or a temporary one?

Honestly I hadn't even considered a temporary home... That might be a possibility. I just don't know what to do. My heart is hurting. This is what my breeder said:

My recommendation would be a smaller bird like the blue head pionus - smaller cage, great companion and he would be already paid off based upon your deposit versus the rosie which you still owe $750 on.

Just a thought.....

Thanks,
Brandon

I am not sure what to do. I've no interest in keeping a Blue Headed Pionus at all--I would rather just immediately try and sell him. My rosie baby on the other hand... Oh man I love rosies. But I also don't want him to have a crap life in Honduras if I can't find him adequate housing. It's quite a delimna. We are not rich people, so this is tough.

And no, LOL, I am not afraid of bugs. Or tarantulas and scorpions. Just "suicide showers." (Showers with electrical wires in the shower head to heat it.)

Are you moving for good? Or just for a set time?

Because you can always wait and get the bird when you come back.

I definitely WOULD NOT get a bird you don't really want, just because it is smaller...

I would love to have a blue headed pionus. But it would depend on the cost of him. I'm not rich, either and have many other birds to consider already.

Every cockatoo I've ever had has been very noisy. This may be a hurtle for a friend of mine (she lives in an apartment), but she loves birds as much as I and has been looking for a new addition to her flock. She may not even mind a temporary arrangement if that is what you decide on. I can ask.

I don't want to put you on the spot, though. I realize that I am a total stranger. So is anyone I might recommend.

No, not at all. I am most likely looking for a long term home for him. As for the Blue Headed Pionus, he costs $750. My only problem is that I won't be in the US to pick him up when he is weaned!!! So THAT would make it difficult to sell him, unless I found someone to "buy" him from me and the breeder send him to them. Basically these are my options:

1) Figure out some way to take my RB2
2) Sell my RB2
3) Sell my $750 "slot" so that someone else could get the BHPi sent directly to them since I will be out of the country when he is weaned.

Let me ask my friend on the off chance she might take him. I can also ask around within my network as well. Since you live in Texas too, I feel like we Texas parrot fanatics should stick together. I have contacts within rescue groups and maybe something can be worked out.

Alternatively, maybe taking the rosie is not that unrealistic? How long will you be away? If only for a year or two, it might be worth it to live slightly cramped but keep your rosie?
