Deciding on which conure

when we lost our cinnamon green cheek, we went to the store/rescue we got her from and the ladies there listened and knew exactly what kind of "personality" we were looking for. I knew we wanted something on the smaller side and tame and sweet since I am not that experienced. I was in my head looking for another green cheek, but none of them really "clicked". Then they showed me a baby sun conure and I fell in love! I had heard how noisey they can be and they can bite harder but this was the best choice for us. We visited Indy for a month before we took her home and are now finishing out her hand feeding. Yes, she is loud when I come home, I get a loud screeching with wings open as a greeting lol at night we have not had a problem with noise, she is so cuddly that she falls asleep in our jackets or robe at night and we put her to be without a fuss. The mornings as soon as she hears us awake it's another screech greeting, but I never let her out when she's screeming EVER or it will just get worse. They have to know that screaming doesn't get them anything they want. Other than that, she just does this "chattering" thing that is really soft and adorable. Our green cheek was nippy only when she was hungry, and I did have her screaming for the first 3 weeks or so until she learned. I loved her so much, and I love my sun conure just as much. It's really what is best for your situation, and maybe if you can put a hold on a baby or bird and go and visit it a few times to get an idea of what kind of personality it has? sorry I wrote you a novel here, but I hope this helps! I also like that idea of going on youtube to get an idea of the noise. That's what we did lol :P

Have you gone to a local rescue and met some birds there? Just a suggestion. Suns are really loud (but not if they're put to bed at night) but there are so many different kinds of birds and they all have their own personalities. Our Quaker parrot is kind of loud but you can't beat his sweetness (although sometimes he cops an attitude).

My GCC never bites or nips. I don't know if it's her personality, or that she feels very safe and comfortable, which I think is really important to avoiding biting.

My sun conure rarely squawks, never at night and the first time he squawks in the morning is when someone goes past his cage

It all depends on the bird, and that's the luck of the draw. Green cheeks can be very loud, and they can get loud at night if they hear noise. All parrots get loud at some point every day. Suns can be as nippy as any other. It all depends on socialization and training. And even then, they will turn around and break all the rules. Conures draw blood when they bite--almost every time. They can be extremely possessive of the person who they bond with...and that decision is theirs and theirs alone. It doesn't matter who the bird is "for", when they make their decision they generally stick to it and very fiercely. Having a conure is like having a super hyperactive child. There is no day off.and if they don't get the attention they need it explodes out in different ways. They get super hormonal and that's when all hell breaks loose. They hump (like dogs), shred, scream, and bite bite bite. That's half of the year. On the other hand, for the person they are bonded to they are the sweetest, cuddliest birds I've ever encountered next to a cockatoo. If you get him for your son and he bonds with him (luck of the draw) this bird will probably live until he's married and beyond. He can't just leave him behind. Is a huge responsibility. But you know your son better than anyone, and if he's ready, he's ready. :) as long as he's extremely patient and willing to accept that the bird may not bond with him. Conures also frequently attack the people they are not bonded to without any provocation.

^ Sounds like a conure! This is good advice, heed it well!
