Do you buy organic to avoid pesticides? If so, read this

Yeah, a lot of things used in "organic" farming can be as harmful or more so.

Growing up, my grandparents always had a garden so we had fresh vegetables and fruit, now that I'm older I try to always get things that are locally grown and in season. If your produce is shipped from anywhere, also remember they those people picking the veggies might not have the best hygiene!

Yup, had read that also.

Your right, target local farmers, local growth. At least its grown in local dirt! :D

Nearly everything that is not local grown is sprayed with a water based bug spray. Like stated in dozens of posts here, wash your Veggies!

What do you wash your veggies with?

I use a vegetable spray called Fit to wash.. can find in most grocery stores in spring and summer.

Hmmmm. You guys are getting a little paranoid. I figure if I eat it, she can eat it, organic or not. Dang! We do the best we can for all our pets...dogs, cats, birds. They're pets. Get it? We try to give them the best life possible, but if truth be told, no wild animal should be kept as a pet....that includes parrots. They're not domesticated to my knowledge. So we take on this little wild thing and try to give it a good life because we're fascinated and it makes us happy. Parrots are so smart that they've learned to adapt to our lifestyle. If we do all we can and go the extra mile, we can give them a good life. But organic food? Great if you eat organic food.....bit it's expensive!

Here is how you wash. Nope I don't wash everything . A lot of stuff I just started peeling. He does not eat the outside of Squash and a few other things so why even put it in the cage.

I get where you're coming from, honestly I do! Trust me, I don't buy all organic myself. BUT... for one, I personally never said this was about "parrot food" which is why I posted it in the Off Topic section. ;)

It's a good topic for discussion, and I knew some folks would be interested in it. If you're not, just pass on it, okay? That's what I do whenever I find a thread that irritates the crap out of me :).

I think if I can get organic, great and all the better. At the same time "not going organic into the poor house." Mix and matching is good and fun. As long as I'm eating a vegetable or fruit, still good...just wash. Reading labels and eating naturally is important as knowing organic (cheaper at times too). I know I've learned I think that if it's one to peel, don't really have to wash it but definitely wash good if not one to peel. Locally grown and in season is always best. I find that growing my own certain herbs is the way for accessibility, or any vegetable in general. Plus it's a good thing overall in terms of gardening, sustainability, etc. It's like canned vs dried, cooked beans too. And as on the topic of fresh also, when cooking sometimes it's nice to use canned or dried instead of fresh or use canned and fresh (as to the flavor).

Thanks Julie, great article. No such thing as too much information.... read it and agree or move on!

I buy some foods organic for the birds, not believing them to be pesticide-free but rather having been grown with "safer" sprays. Really opened my eyes!!

Me too, apple cider vinegar. Hard to find here sometimes but regular vinegar will do in a pinch. Sometimes lemon water works just as well.

I use regular vinegar. I buy it in gallon jugs and soak everything for about an hour, then I do a thorough rinse.

I buy all organic. There's 20 different pesticide in one apple. I used to juice Dino everyday 1x fresh organic apple.
