Flying?

Sorry about that! LOL I was going to use the numbers 1-3, but then realized that's not how the primaries are labeled...

Here's a drawing of a wing with the primary and secondaries labeled by number.

I haven't actually counted how many have been clipped each side, but it looks like full primaries. It's the first four feathers (10 through 7) on the outer wing that are growing out, but 1 is missing on each side. (i.e. #8 on one side and #7 on the other - those feathers are still clipped)

I had a flighted canary that I allowed to be free in my home several time throughout the day. He was lovely and loved to fly around. He is gone now and now I have a Parrotlet and a Senegal situation. Kiwi the P'let has 3 of her flight feathers on each side back now. Twice now she has chosen to pick a fight with my Rio my Senegal who is also molting but not at the rate kiwi is, and doesn't have any of her flight feathers back yet. I am seriously thinking about clipping Kiwi again. Or she will not be allow to be free in the house other then my daughters room. But I can't imagine banishing her to one room since she is so used to being part of our family daily life. I would love to keep her flighted, but eventually she is going to cause great harm to herself. And that would make me very sad.

Monica,

I know what you mean by the numbers! :)

Now I got to view it on my home computer where I can enlarge it to view it, I just wish they have a closeup picture of the wing to really view it. Here's what I can see, 7, 8, 9, and 10 looks like intact on the right wing where 6, 5, 4, 3 were clipped on the right wing. While the left looks like 7, 8, 9, 10 are intact and 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 were clipped. In order to really work with them not being able to fly 1-10 needs to be clipped in the line with the primary coverts! In which yes they drop down instead of glide. They will be able to fly with the glide clip or any primaries left not being clipped. So that is still a poor example to show that birds can fly being clipped. You know I'm just speaking from what I know and done in my experience with clipping. And this is a peaceful conversation....hehe.....So no one get bent outta shape please! :)
