TL;DR my green cheek is acting afraid of me/will no longer go to bed.
Hello all, so I purchased and brought home an approx. 2 y.o male green cheek conure almost 8 months ago. His name is Nori. He had a good bond supposedly with his previous owner but she gave him away to be rehomed because she had purchased another bird and they did not get along.
Long story short, we bonded quickly our first week and worked on basic training including stepping up and recall. And while in the beginning he had a period where he would bite me hard if he did not want to step up or be moved to another place over time he has mainly stopped biting. During the day while I’m at work he is free from his cage in my bedroom which I bird proofed. From late afternoon/early evening he is free to fly around on the main level of the home with supervision. There are times he will need to be brought back to the bedroom if I am leaving out for an appointment or errand. And then of course at bedtime I bring him to his cage and he is covered and lights out for 12 hours a night.
Recently however, everyday, he has started to refuse to go upstairs to the bedroom. When I offer him my hand to step up he immediately flies away. If I offer him a step up stick he also flies away. The only way I can now get him back upstairs is by catching him off guard and holding him in my hand or have another family member bring him up. Even when we are in my bedroom and I go to pick him up to bring him to his cage he flies from me and runs into his cage himself. He has never done this before and is almost acting as if he’s scared of me. He will still let me hold him occasionally and will snuggle into my hand but he has changed and is avoiding me somewhat. He will also not take snacks or food from my hand. To be fair, that was a way I would encourage him to go to bed by offering him a snack and then putting him to bed.
Anytime I need to leave the house and there is no one else around to bring him to the bedroom it’s almost impossible to catch him as he’s fully flighted. I have resorted to chasing him in circles and eventually giving up. I honestly have no idea where this sudden change has come from and don’t know what to do to get things back to normal. Thankful for any advice.
