Hello everybody!

I recently bought a new Indian Ringneck and the seller said that she thinks it has eight months old and that is a male. But for me it looks much more older, because of its dark beak and the scaled foots. Also it seems to be molting his feathers. I really would appreciate the help from someone more experienced that me xD!

Here some pictures:

Males have a distinctive ring around their necks at appears as they sexually mature, whereas females do not. So you either have a young male or a female. If the breeder said he was 8 months old, I'm not understanding why you would be questioning the breeder?? So you could wait and see if the ring appears or do a DNA test. He does look moth eaten, could be molting. Keep an eye on it.

I forget to mention that the breeder bought him two month ago, and she didn't know how old was the Ringneck. So she estimate 8 month. The reason why she sell it was because she want a female, and it may look like a male. Another question, did female Ringneck can have a black beak? And is there any recommended website for the DNA test?

Where are you located? That bird needs a bath right away, and is molting harder than any bird I have seen if that is a molt. I really suggest taking it to an again vet ASAP.

Too young to tell the gender by the ring, a DNA test is only $20 through avian biotech. Go ahead and google them.

And the dark beak is not because of age. The breeder you got him from doesn't sound very reputable, or they would know that is not an Indian ringneck, it appears to be an African ringneck or a hybrid.

Thanks for your recommendation, I work in a vet and I already give him/her treatment for thrips at the very first moment xD, just in case :). Sincerely the "breeder" don't know much about Ringnecks, and Caesar (if is male) wasn't in a nice habitat. I think that his excessive molting maybe caused of stress.

What kind of treatment is ceaser receiving? Any bloodwork? To survive birds hide illness very well, this bird does not look well, but I could be totally wrong, so I don't want to worry you.

Ceasar received a tiny acaricide dose. It's been three days from the treatment and I have seen a greatly improvement in his feathers. So maybe he have a combination of stress, mites, a yearly molt. Well I guess that is impossible to know exactly how old he is, so for my other concern (his gender) I will recruit to the website that you recommend me. I really appreciate your quick response! :) A+++:):):):)

Can't wait to see how he improves.. Sounds like he is in the right place. What's his diet like?

He's eating a mix of Zupreem fruitblend + natural agrocenter seeds, and handpicked fruits like mango and strawberries... Also he's received calcium and vits:)
