Introducing The New Adventures Of Princess Peach!! 💝

Well it finally happened, guess it was inevitable, but Princess Peachie finally laid an egg 😱 I had put her to bed and Lovejoy and I were having our snuggle time when she started making high pitched squealing noises, and when I went to check on her she had “laid” it and it fell onto the grate at the bottom of her cage and broke. No idea if it was fertile and if there are more, which there probably will be, I have no intention of letting them hatch. Thankfully I still have a faux egg from when Lilly was laying infertile eggs so she can sit on that if she gets broody. Didn’t take a photo of the egg cos it was a bit bloody and cracked, and not pretty, but here’s a pic of the dummy egg, it’s an egg-shaped chunk of snowy quartz. So now the “fun” begins - and now I need a stiff drink!! 🙄

Second egg arrived tonight, again "laid" from her high perch and broken on the grate. She was playing with her quartz egg today, treating it more like it was a toy than anything else. I have a pack of dummy eggs on order being shipped up from Sydney, should arrive in a few days. Sigh......

Third and fourth eggs arrived right on schedule 48 hours apart. Giving her a little supplementary calcium and fake eggs arrived. Made her a nice little nest but she’s still not the least bit interested in it … sigh*

Oh, Princess! Congratulations times FIVE... so far?!!!??
I'm so excited. I won't tell the Rickeybird, though, lest he lose his mind in a jealous rage. 'Course, it would be hard to tell that from his usual sweet nature...
Anyway, you go girl. Hen. You go, hen!

Nooooo there will be no babies I’m afraid, @GaleriaGila. I seriously doubt the eggs are fertile, and besides which I don’t have the capacity to deal with the inevitable issues that would come with them if they were. I’m pretty sure she’s got another on board that she’ll lay tonight, even though the “conjugal relations” are virtually now down to zero, but she’s still making them cos she just gets SO worked up over that little rooster 🙄 I’ve got a vet appointment lined up for Saturday and if she keeps laying I’ll ask them about a hormone implant, too many eggs are just not a good thing for her, poor girlie!

Ok so after eight (!!!) eggs, the last one having been laid last night, Peachie went to the vet for a hormone implant today. And as she has to rest following her brief period under anaesthetic, she and the randy rooster are on a strict “no shagging” regimen for the rest of the day! Not that they’ve had a proper shag since Monday, but she just gets herself SO hyped up over him that the eggs keep coming anyway 🙄

Here’s the “before” at the clinic, having her weigh in...

...and "after" back at home, straight into her food!

The implant is not expected to kick in for a good 'nother 48-72 hours, and according to the ultrasound they did at the clinic she's already got another egg locked and loaded and ready to go. With any luck she'll lay that tomorrow and that might just be the end of it for this season at least. Fingers crossed!! 🤞🤞🤞

Nine days post implant, so time for an update. Peachie had her procedure on Saturday the 19th, and she laid an egg on the Sunday night as expected, and another on the Tuesday night which I pretty much expected she would. But since then - nothing. Not so much as a shimmy or a shake or a bit of discomfort or an indication that there were any more on the way. She’s flying and eating, looking very energetic and screaming her head off but not in that hysterical ear-splitting way she had been doing all day long for weeks, so I’ll call all of that a win.

Something to note about those implants, they shut down the reproductive system which then brings on a moult, and Peachie is most definitely undergoing one of those right now, she lost three big tail feathers yesterday alone!

Terrible photo because of the glare in the bird room, but here she is with her “short” tail …

Lovejoy’s a little disappointed that she’s not as warm for his form as before so I have to keep a close eye on him , he still gives it a red hot try whenever my back is turned..

Such a lovely trio of feathers! What are you gonna do with them? :D.

I really should do something with them cos I do keep her tail feathers, they’re just too pretty to throw away!

Tail and large feathers are perfect for this. I have a container full of saved feathers. Nameliss are used make dream catchers. They're super easy. Lots of instructions on line. They are supposed to be hung over a child's cradle. Legend is the bad dreams are caught in the web. The good are filtered gently by the feathers to sleeper. They are now a fad. Decorative wall hangings. These I made. A few have Nameliss feathers. I only give them to special folks. They can be as simple or as complicated as you want. So you can make just one round. Don't let mine run you off. Maybe 60 years practice showing here.
