There in lies the issue. There is no difference in the coloration between males and females. An experienced bird handler could give a educated guess by feeling the pelvis, as the females have a wider one for passing eggs, males are narrower.
Only real way is to get a DNA test done.
Where I got my Phoenix guessed male by pelvic feeling, but she has been raising chicks there for 30+ years. I did DNA test him, turned out he was a him.
