Just need some reassurance

Rico, my baby boy is sick (i think). His droppings for about 4 days have been watery, sometimes its just water. His diet hasn’t changed, hes going through a small molt. There hasnt been any changes to his routine so i doubt hes stressed. Ive done my research and have a feeling it might my a kidney issue i made my appointment but the nearest date they had was a week from now! I just need someone to tell me if my theory is right. Rico hasnt had any change in behavior and is about 9 months old if that helps. Ive attached some photos that i took over the past few days, as you can see the droppings kind of vary in consistency, the ones on the orange background are the most recent. If anyone has any at home ideas on how to help this please let me know! Im also curious to know on average how much this next vet visit will cost me? Thank you all

Welcome to you and Rico. Unsure what is happening but definitely worthy of a vet visit. Droppings will change appearance when given fresh veggies/fruits vs pellets or seeds, but what you describe and illustrate seems unrelated.

Cost will vary depending on location, but expect a significant battery of tests, including blood panel, fecal cultures, others as deemed necessary during exam. If money a serious issue, they will usually prioritize what is minimally required to reach a confident diagnosis. If able, a certified avian vet best when dealing with potentially serious issues.

Whenever you see a lasting change, it's best to get it checked. Dropping vary by species, and individual (due to diet etc). Sometimes, my bird will have random watery poop,BUT, that is also part of her pattern ---you are worried, so I would go with your gut (even if your bird is okay, it's better to know and be safe, then to wait and be wrong).



Ideally, most poop should have 3 parts (urates (the white strings), urine (the liquid) and feces (the chunks lol). Coloration can change due to diet or other illnesses etc. Water content can change due to diet or illnesses...stress can sometimes cause a temporary shift as well, but stress also lowers immunity to environmental diseases. Smaller droppings over time generally mean less is being eaten or that there is a blockage (this isn't the only thing you would see with a blockage btw...) just giving you an overview of how much variety there can be.


The most important thing here, is that you have noticed a sustained change, and that is worth investigating. Poop is super important in catching sickness early, so if you know your bird fairly well, go with your gut. even if you don't know your bird that well, go with your gut--- you could be wrong, but at least then (assuming you find an avian vet who runs proper diagnostics) you know what is/isn't normal in the future.


Noodles had a liver issue when I got her and poop was probably one of my first flags, followed by subtle changes in behavior--- with bacterial stuff, I have generally noticed issues with behavior and poop as well. I am still paranoid about the color of Noodles' urine because of her past liver issue, but sometimes, poop can mix with urine and create what appears to be colored urine (when actually, it's just mixed). The thing is, without a vet's testing, you really can't be sure.


Are we certain Rico is a boy? Have you noticed any straining?

The first one just under text looks pretty normal.

Weigh your bird, digital kitchen scale.
And added warmth help sick birds tremendously
