Pineapple Greencheek Conure: Hilo (hee-loh) 8 weeks :)
Hello I just got a brand new saddle and it’s been sitting in my room and I noticed it smells very strong like leather. Not necessarily chemically but very leathery. They do oil it with some kind of oil too so that may not be good. Do you guys know if the leather smell will hurt my conure. Do you think it will be fine if I open a window?

Thanks, 😊

Did the horse thing years ago. Never brought a new saddle into the house for the very reason that you are commenting on! Saddle leather is thicker than that used on furniture and as a result, they use far more treatment to flow to depth. Best place for the saddle is the saddle room in the horse barn.

It depends on what is causing the smell. Leather itself, no...but tanners and finishes, oils, sprays etc can be harmful. I would absolutely remove it from your parrot's room because it doesn't need to be there and you do not know what is causing the smell.

I agree with everyone, the saddle needs to be in the barn. No matter the tanning method used, those odors are carrying chemicals that can affect you parrot negatively. PLease do this ASAP before its too late.
