Not a parrot owner, but currently caring for a Java finch.
So I got my Java finch today, he just settled in about an hour ago. Now he is actively chirping and exploring and nibbling on the seeds i got for him. But noticed when he was flying about clinging to the bars in the cage he easily loosened the door. Another swift landing on that door and it could come crashing open, now my concern is that he will bump into that in the night or when I am at work and escape. I guess my question is can I reinforce the lock with some scotch tape or will he inquisitively pick at the tape and ingest it? or will it be safe?

You can get those dog leash latch things to latch the door shut. But if you have some twisty ties, you can use that temporary for a finch until you get the latch.

The twist ties would work for now but I suggest you get a better cage.

I like that dog leash hatch idea, it would definitely cheaper than getting a whole new cage heh, but for now twist ties it is.

has he got a name yet? I'm glad you went and got him you're going to get a lot of enjoyment from him or her. I have a quaker parrot in a big cage with seven doors and I use the clips you get at the hardware store for a key or dog leash for the doors that I use and I used zip ties for the ones that I don't use. Quakers are too good at opening doors. Good luck .Alison and sweetie pie:D

Yeah I got him :D very glad I did. He is beautiful, I have him near my computer as I work. Spent all day! talking to him telling him how gorgeous he is and much I love him, whistling back and humming to respond to his peeps. I also gave him some banana and apple, trying to see his favorite treats he likes, so far he likes the banana the most!
