Need Advice.

I am adopting one of my mothers Eclectus Females. The bird took to me very well after I stayed with my parents for a few months. The reservation I have is that I have a 4 yr old daughter who has a cat here at my new house. This cat loves to watch the birds outside and jump from window to window. My first question would be... is it safe to have a bird like this where there is a cat in the house? I would be getting a good size cage for the bird and would mainly be in my home office.

Second question... I tend to travel for 3-5 days for work. Is it safe to leave them alone for that long as long as they have food and water?

You can never teel if the bird are safe with the cat, you just have to test when being near so you can rescue the cat lol.

If you can get someon to come ones a day it would be better but they will cope for 3-5 days if the get fresh water every day

Eclectus are terrible for dunking their food in their water, by the end of the day it usually looks like soup & if your going to be away for extended periods i think you would risk your birds health. You really need to change their water at least twice a day. They also do better on a fresh fruit & vegetable diet. If a friend could help out while your away. But to be fair on the bird i would leave her where she is.

I would be afraid when I turned my back the cat would be messing w/the bird in the cage. Could cause him to injure himself, I never leave my cat in the house w/my bird.

First off, congrats on the Eclectus. Secondly, I trust no cat around my birds period. Birds shouldn't be left alone or without being checked on for more than 24 hours at any given time. The longest I would leave a bird is 24 hours without someone checking on him, especially Eclectus's, which actually demand human contact. If my Ekkie doesn't see me for more that an hour or two, he will climb down from his cage and walk through the house looking for me. He will even pass right by my wife on his hunt for me.

So if your talking about leaving your Ekkie in a cage unsupervised for 3-5 days, then PLEASE DON"T GET A BIRD and especially and eclectus. Eclectus's are very loving and sensative birds and require human contact. I also change out my Ekkie's water 4-5 time a day and that is like the minimum. Like has been stated already, Ekkie's are like racoons, they like to dunk certain foods in their water.

So I hope I mis-read your initial post regarding leaving your bird for 3-5 days while your gone for work. I hope your talking about 8 hour days and being at home with your bird at night. But if your talking about being away from home for 3-5 days and nights then please don't accept this bird unless you have someone else who can care for him while your away.

I hope I mis-read your post and everything works out for you, Eclectus's are special birds.

Thank you all for the great advice. Maybe not the right time to have her here at the house yet. Over the last 4 yrs my mother says she has become un-manageable so that's why she wanted to give her to me.

Its all being said in all of the above postings! Unless you can have someone around giving her fresh water, fruits & veggies, etc everyday, its not going to work!

And love! Birds need lots of love! Especially if there are behavioral problems!
