Need to rehome Blue and Gold Mccaw in Texas

Hello, my father's health has gotten worse and it's getting harder for him to care for her properly. It's a blue and gold and it's name is Peaches. Located in the Dallas, Texas area. My father would like $500 as a rehoming fee. Feel free to message me or reach out to me with any questions.

I don't know if the new owner would want it but Peaches has a really nice and big cage she lives in that will come with. It's like four feet long, three feet wide and like 5.5 feet tall.

Has he/she been DNA sexed. as all of these things will impact someone's ability to make the commitment or not (especially if the potential adopter has other birds, gender matters).


Also, what are the cage dimensions? The cage he/she is in right now does not look very large for a macaw, but it could be the camera angle or a sleep-cage, which is why I am asking.
Also, do you know what that cage is made of? It doesn't look like stainless and zinc/galvanized cages can be extremely dangerous, so whoever gets him/her needs to know that so that they know whether or not to plan on buying a new cage.

I am not sure how old Peaches is. We got her in 1987 and she was full grown then from what I remember, I was only 11 at the time. Let me ask Dad if a blood test was ever done. The previous owner called her Peaches so we always assumed a female.

I feel so bad--- I can't imagine how hard that must be for both of them (and you). Thank you for posting-- hey--- any chance you would take on the job? I mean, I know they are a massive undertaking, but you are the closest thing this gal has other than your dad (when it comes to family) and they don't bond that easily...


Does your dad use the computer at all? Is he okay with this, or feeling sad or just knowing that it is what it is? I am not saying there is anything wrong with you posting for him, and obviously you take him into account etc as you are consulting with him, but is he okay with this whole thing or does he have any hopes/wishes for the type of home she goes to?


He's had her 35 years--- that is so hard

Do you know how long she was with the previous owner? I mean, she could be in her 40s or 50s even, but that is still not that old for a macaw.

Well, I hope you find her a really good home. I'm sorry for your dad and you-- I know it can't be easy at all.



Do not just give her to the first person who shows interest though and look out for "flippers". Are there any sanctuaries near you, because those can also be quite nice in some cases, and if legit, the people who run them are usually in it for the right reasons (assuming you can confirm legitimacy). The benefit of a good sanctuary is that she might be able to bond with a large enough group that she feels less upset about the transition, but no guarantee.


A home could be good too, but make sure that the person you give her to has macaw or large parrot experience and ask about what pets they have and if they have ever lost a bird due to illness etc--- things like that can be dangerous to a bird coming into a new home. Also find out if they have kids and if those kids are used to large parrots etc. If they have an avian vet nearby, that is also very important, as exotics and regular vets really do fall short in terms of care.

I'm sure you will be cautious. Active members are great cuz you can read things they have posted in the past. Beware of people who join just to take your burd.

We have had a lot if successful happy rehome here . I myself took in a quaker that needed a home quick. We were both happy abd stayed in touch over a year...but then it became to hard for him , I hope he checks in sometimes here to see he us doing great.

So I very much hope for a happy home.
The Mac owners here are great but aren't on as often as a lit of us are...

Oh yes--- many people collect parrots or sell them as soon as they adopt them because they can get a higher price in certain markets. It's sick and sad and it's by no means everyone, but it is definitely something to screen for extensively. I would ask for pictures of the home with the person in them (holding a sign with a phrase on it) to prove that it is actually them and not just someone taking pictures from other parrot people. I would also do a reverse image search on any images they send you, as that will tell you if they stole the picture from another website.


Laurasea's absolutely right-- lots of great members, but there are some people who join and just post about wanting a certain type of bird or say they are interested in taking any and all over and over (if they are established, I wouldn't worry so much, but if they only have 10 posts and they are all about how they will take any parrot etc, then I'd be wary). Now, some people are just interested in a bird (period) and that is okay, but look at post history, finances etc etc before just giving the bird to someone.

Ok one quick update, I spoke to my brother just now, she was born in 1987, we got her in 1990. He said band on her foot indicates she was born in the US and not imported.

hello is she friendly able to be hand fed me and my family are looking to add a new member to the family. I have two girls but we want to be able to have out of the cage most of the time.
