Hi everyone! I’m from Livonia, which is south of Rochester, NY. We only have one bird store around us. The biggest problem is there are not many Avian and vets here and NO emergency 24 hour avian vets

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome to the forums!!

Do you have a bird(s) or are you looking to welcome one or more into your home? Kudos for recognizing the value of avian qualified vets and facilities. Sadly, the reality is many folks are faced with lengthy drives which can be problematic during full blown emergency. As alternative, some vets treat "exotics" including avians. Many are reasonably skilled and competent to treat minor issues - need to carefully research user reviews. Of primary concern is they knowing limitations and refusing to engage in "fishing expeditions" when your bird may be seriously ill.

Welcome!

Thank you, for taking the time to research Avian Medial Care in your area. An alternative could be a Large Animal Vet, also known as Farm Vets. They are much better than Dog & Cat specialists as they also care for the Farm birds. Take care as there are also Horse specialists out there and they tend to be near 95% horses only.

The Pet Store has to be using someone, with hope they are not using the Traveling Avian Vet as the last I heard, he was having health problems and visits have become very spotty of late.

I know people some manage without, but it can make it VERY dangerous for the bird if there is illness or an emergency (which, is not uncommon with birds). I had to use an exotics vet that saw a lot of birds for a period of time and if I had followed all of their advice, Noodles might have died...Regular DVMs are even less reliable, so it is certainly a risk and extremely frightening as an owner if you are aware that what they are saying or doing conflicts with what you know.

**Are you sure there isn't any avian vet within a few hours?** Many of us do commute great distances.

Again--- I know that avian vets can be hard to find, but if I had a dollar for every midnight post saying, "help! my bird is breathing funny and on the ground and there are no avian vets" I would probably have a decent chunk of cash. It is a very scary and unpleasant situation to put yourself in as an owner if you can avoid it, as you KNOW your bird needs help but there is no one around who can do it.

Bird stores can also be sketchy in terms of of disease (asymptomatic spread of serious and often deadly disease can and does happen). 40+% of birds carry stuff that can kill or harm others without ever showing any symptoms themselves...So when you have a shop full of birds, you really do increase that risk (as feather dander in the air can spread PDD, ABV and PBFD and no one tests for these unless symptoms appear--- breeders and bird shops can't really afford the tests either and they can produce false negatives in carriers without symptoms).
