“Come-come lets go!” “WHAT! It is only 3 am, SLEEP!” 5 Minutes went by and I shook my hubby again: “Come-come lets go
PLEASE!”
“Alright then, go switch the kettle on”.
Kruger here I come!!!!
Children are fed, pillows are packed around the beds, all windows are closed, toilet seats are down and Sterretjie has her Pinata.
Car packed, flasks, cooler box, food, binoculars, cameras, books, maps, paper bags….. and before we could even get in and go we had our first sighting! We walked straight into the bush babies as they returned home! Oh thank God they are still living by us! I crabbed my camera from the car and quickly took a photo for you. They are the cutest little things alive!
It is a horrible gravel road to Kruger Park and we have to hold the coffee and tea tightly to prevent spilling. As usual we are FIRST by the gate – we HAVE TO be first otherwise the chances of seeing predators reduce to almost 0%. There are 9 entry gates to Kruger and the cues can be over a 100 cars at a time. We got out of the car and stood by the gate overlooking the Crocodile River while enjoying our coffee and tea and listening to the incredible bush sounds. That was when I spot something in the far distance – CAN YOU BELIEVE – a pride of lions with cubs!!!!!!!!!!! I love baby lions, they are so adorable and playful and very seldomly seen.
What an incredible day it has already been – we are so blessed. We watched them until they disappeared in the bush. The gate opened an hour later, we booked in and decided to take the river road that goes to Berg and Dal rest camp. Before we could reach the dirt road a white rhino crossed in front of us. They are such MAGNIFICENT creatures and at the rate that they are poached for their horns here in South Africa they are very close to the endangered species list like the Black rhino. The horn that you see in this photo sells at an average of R350 000.00 or $ 40 000/kg the rhino however
IS PRICELESS!
About 5km later a Nyala crossed the road! We were very surprised because they are mainly found up North – 350km away! God really had fun with them, colouring their legs orange and adding funny lines and spots.
After turning onto the gravel road we noticed lots of broken trees, evidence of herds of elephant and not enough food.
A couple of meters down the road we found a huge bull elephant foraging for tree routes. We recorded him in action and the sound of the braking tree sent chills down my spine. I LOVE elephants too much for my own good.
It is such a sad-sad time of the year, all the vegetation is dead, and most of the rivers are dry. The sun beats down and it reaches anywhere between 37 – 49 C with almost no food or shade for the animals.
These guys are by far the most ugly of all the creatures, although they are really beautiful as babies! It is the blou wilde bees, also known as stupid. The reason for their nickname is that they always run for nothing and then turn back to go and see what they were running from. In the process they become an easy target for a pride of lions.
I am going to leave you for now with our next sighting, can you see it and identify it?
