Penny is sick, I've been holding back making a thread

The doxycycline continues on, no bumps in the road.

Had to share this of Penny eating her greens. She eats her veggies, but has only recently started eating the leafy stuff so it makes me so happy! This is bagged slaw I shared

LOL! CUTE-- reminds me of an old lady at a church picnic eating coleslaw or something (don't get me wrong, I have no issue with coleslaw, I just say this based on her dainty consumption and what I know already lol)

Penny is totally an old lady bird! Ha! She is the also the only one i have to cut stuff up for, she is dainty. The others attack the veggies, haul them around climb on them, walk around with veggies mess stuck in their faces and beak lol

Doxycycline continues.......
Penny 111
Pikachu 116
Ta-dah 84
Orbit 95

Orbit has taken until today to get over me clipping his nail for DNA test on Friday. . Giving him a cuddle right now

Pikachu took a bath, its kinda chilly. So I drape my sweater over him. He ( soon DNA test will get results) puts up with his silly mum.

Well my mind is blown!!! I have all girls!! Girls power flock!!! ( parakeets are boys)

Pikachu is a shock, Neptune didn't like, Pikachu is courted Penny..... I'd believe hermaphrodite over a true female. My vet us surprise to, but knows parrots are tricky as are their pair bonds. Even in the wild with free mate choice same sex pair bonds happen..

I'm so shocked I will re test Pikachu..but 99% accuracy i will hsve to just reset my brain into thinking girl

Oh all my beautiful girls!!!@ we will have a girl party and extra girly treats!!
trying to think of a new name for Orbit..

And, the why I have given-up guess the sex of Parrots! Short of laying eggs, DNA is the best way to go.

Blue Boy is the rescues Budgie, right? The one you found recently while searching for Neptune? How is he doing?

Thank you, they are wonderful! All but 2 started out as someonelse's birds !! I'm a big believer in taking on a re home or a true rescue, they are every bit as loving!!!

I asked Pikachu/Peekaboo are you a girl bird or are you a boy bird?

The answer was pure wisdom! " I am a good bird!!"

So awesome! Even more so because he doesn't talk very often...

Ok!!! I gotta dig back. Doxycycline treatment may stop today!!!!!!!!!

I'm talking to vet, maximum allowed treatment is 60 days, she kinda wants me to go to 60 days. We are talking to see if I can set the budgies free, but keep treatment in water....

We have hut 45 days tho yippee!!! Its just because this has been so hard, with relapses that she want to stretch to the safety margin of 60 gosh darn days! She is the best vet ever so will do it. Darn it i thought today was the day!!

Budgies, especially typhoid Blue Boy, will stay locked up till 24th. Doxycycline treatment continues...........
Deep cleaning. Changed filter on AC . Through out filter from vacuum and have new one ready to go. Wipes cage bars with dilute bleach, bird are of course out and windows open

Recap , treatment is for psittacosis, or i just call chlamydia. Budgie rescue from the wild brought in wild type chlamydia strain that was extra deadly. Penny broke first and almost died. I still can't believe we saved her!!@ she stopped eating has to be fed bsby burd formula by hsnd for 10 days!! Has to have a heat panel, and of course antibiotics were started ASAP. The rest of flock seemed fine, but started loosing weight. They were started on antibiotics, do to issues Ta-dah wasn't getting full treatment and aldo got very very sick....Cloudy lost nearly 25% of his body weight,
so was also very very sick !!!! Phoebe sermed to only have a mild case.
Knowing their normal weight, weight checks every day while sick, really paid off in helping us best this. Birds hide being sick!!! Some of my birds the only symptom was weight loss!!!! And while all had the same infection , tge ones with symptoms were different.
Past pages may hsve different burd names. I DNA checked my last 2 and found they were girls, so I changed names.

I really liked the name Orbit...but it became an alarm call. She never liked it. I gave so many treats with new name!! So now she comes running when I say Phoebe! Like the person who shared the Grey parrot thst knew she was a girl, I think Phoebe knows she is a girl too. I swear her eyes sparkle when I say good girl instead of good boy.

Pikachu/Peekaboo may have to keep calling Pikachu as I keep forgetting. Still holding out that he is a he! O am sending out a second DNA test!
Pikachu initiate the head bob and regulations, this is a male courtship behavior. But girls can do it to. Penny does this to me. Pikachu gaurds Penny , and will chase any courtship budgies away. Pikachu likes to coax Penny into a cage then aggressively defends the cage. Reading says females can become more aggressive defenders if nest. Pikachu is my largest quaker, makes tend to be 15% larger. Pikachu self stimulate exactly like DNA male Neptune. Pikachu will pick up objects and fly with them. Males usually are tge ones to bring nesting material, both build. Neptune also flew with objects. None of my others do this. Neptune and Pikachu would hold my hand with beak and foot and do the deed. These are the reasons I m thinking boy bird.....but this species is considered to have very little to no visual or behavior differences.....
So despite my reasons....as we all know with parrots...I can be completely wrong.. since the possibility exists i could have cross contaminated the sample, im sending it out again. If comes back girl again....I have to accept the science and wrap my brain around it.

I think you should keep the name Pikachu regardless. It’s the cutest name for a little yellow birb/marshmallow! And I bet s/he doesn’t care that the original Pikachu was a boy.

Oh and I love that Phoebe is responding to her new name! I know she struggled with Orbit. It’s interesting how sometimes a pet will let you know when you finally get your name right. We had a Chihuahua that we got as a 6 month old pup. He came to us named Harley. But we had been playing around thinking up names for weeks, so we started testing them on him. The *first* time I said “Godzilla!” He popped his head right around and looked at me as if to say FINALLY!

And my kid had a similar thing when they rescued their dog (3rd and last home!) I don’t remember what he was named, but his previous owners said he didn’t really respond to it. My kid immediately changed the dog’s name to Carol and he was immediately responsive. They also said he wasn’t very affectionate, but he follows Susannah all over the house and sits on them constantly so obviously they weren’t supposed to be his family.

Thank you Inger!
Phoebe really does love her new name ! Its so cute how she responds to it.

I'm going to go edit profile, because I'm stuck thinking Pikachu, lol , just like I'm stuck thinking boy. I thought changing the name woukd help me accept and think girl...but thats a lost cause

Ta-dah dropped weight from her above nirmal 85 down to 81. I think thats normal, im no longer feeding a seed mix that has sunflower seeds. My vet recommended getting a seed mix with sunflower seeds when Ta-dah was so sick and down to 65 grams. Plus I think she geared up for eggs, , , her normal is 74

Penny stayed the same at 111, her normal before becoming sick was 100, but hindsight that was to low for her.

Pikachu dropped to 112.....hmmm.. high was 118, normal is 115..Pikachu has been very hormonal now that he/she won Penny over. Has spent a lot of time guarding Penny and territory and courting

Phoebe up to 98 ( new high), before getting sick was 95. As Phoebe is under 1 year old still maturing.

Penny is the movie star with magnetic irresistible personality lol, Phoebe is only interested in her as well....if Pikachu comes back boy, I might retest Phoebe as well...
The doxycycline treatment continues on, as vet wants 60 days

Yippee! The budgies are free of treatment cage! They are so happy, singing their hearts out!!!

Ta-dah is 80 grams! Her lowest and sickest she was 65 , so 18.75% gain back!!

Saxguy, I know you been following, so if my math is wrong let me know!

Phoebe ( previously Orbit) is a new all time high!! 106 grams!!! Lowest was 90, so a 15% gain. She is still growing so some of that gain is due to that. When I brought her home in November she was 92.

Penny is 110 grams, her lowest was 94 grams so 14.5% gain

Pikachu......still has periorbital swelling by left eye...she is 113grams her lowest was 105 grams so 7.7% gain....but her normal is 115, and her highest was 118( chunky at that weight tho) will be keeping a close eye on her.

Day 60 of doxycycline treatment is the 24th. But I think I only have enough meds to treat Pikachu tomorrow and Thursday.

I'm so happy ! I'm so thankful to my vet! And thank you all for your support and encouragement!! There were some rough low days!

Quick recap for guests. This is 4 months of treatment and sick birds!!!!!!!!
I got called to rescue an escaped budgie in November. Its believed he brought in a strain of wild bird chlamydia.

Penny got sick first, at the end of December, the day before she was fine( not really was just hiding how very sick she was) . The morning she decompensated she was full out fluffed, would not eat, one boute diarrhea . I weighed she was her normal 100 ( that was her normal before) I out a heat panel on her, called and did video consultation, picked up medication next morning, which was almost to late. Penny was life or death fight for her life for 2 weeks , but very sick for longer.

I weighed the rest of the flock the day Penny broke with symptoms, they were normal weight. They had no symptoms. I weighed them a week later . Every single burd had lost4-12% body weight!!!!! No symptoms! Vocal, eating, playing, chewing. All were started on treatment immediately.

Some later developed symptoms, from green urine, rare sneeze or 2,. Penny developed intermittent sinus draining and squint eye. If I worked away from home I might never have seen clear sinus draining, because nostril would quickly dry.
Later Pikachu developed periorbital sinus swelling by left eye, rare draining.
Ta-dah was difficult to treat and would vomit medicine. She became very sick snd has bouts of loose stool and increased wetness urine ten fold. She never stopped eating, or acted sick ( except 2 days at her worst) her behavior was normal, active.

This is the 3rd round of treatment to clear this nasty infection. Azithromyacin was used to save Penny's life. Azithromyacin is a extremely fast acting broad spectrum bactrocidal antibiotic. They received an extended treatment. 10 days after they relapsed and the extra extended doxycycline treatment was started. 41-45 day is usual treatment needed to clear chlamydia/psittacosis . My vet extended to tge safety margin of 60 days. Yogurt was fed to counter act antibiotic diarrhea from such extended treatment. It must have live Acidophilus and Lactobacillus culture and no artificial sweetners.

Anyway to much to go through it all. Just a big take away , know your birds weight, weigh weekly. Weigh daily when sick. Act quickly with weight loss of 3% or more, act like its sn emergency life and death if your birds goes off food, fluffs, extra naps/ sleepy/ eyes keep closing, or has any symptoms!!!
Extra warmth, I use a radiant heat panel is extremely important for sick burds, extra high calories foods, and possibly hand feeding baby bird formula may be need if loosing weight and not eating. Penny took 10 days of hand feeding formula every few hours during the day. I do not condone heat lamps, as many burds get burned or die. My vet has seen many heat lamp victims. I used sweeter heater found on Amazon. Or K and H
Cage warmer.
Please already have an avain vet, already have a scale, act immediately if your burd seems sick! I don't care if they were fine the day before, they weren't they were just hiding it, until they became critical and couldn't hide it anymore.

For tradition. Today's veggies, cucumber, asparagus, Swiss chard, red chili peppers, green beans, fresh corn on the cob. Today they chose Swiss chard as favorite with cucumber as close second. Im out of picture space. But I will get an old one add

Penny and Cloudy

Edit: a little insight into life with MG, currently one eyelid is malfunctioning and stuck closed, one leg is temporarily paralyzed, and I'm having difficulty speaking. Tomorrow everything will reset as acetylcholine reserves will build back up...
