Still don't have a bird yet, so no birds are in peril! I've been doing some umbrella shopping (it's very rainy here in the Pacific Northwest and I personally prefer umbrellas to hoods) and I've seen a lot of "teflon umbrellas". It seems the teflon coats the fabric and helps repel water. I'm just wondering if these are unsafe for birds, as I know teflon is poisonous. I'm also unsure if any of the umbrellas I currently own have teflon in them, and don't really know how to check for that if they turn out to be unsafe. Right now I'm thinking they won't be a problem, as umbrellas don't get warm enough to emit fumes (unless you're setting them on fire or something, I don't know your life :P), but I just want to be sure my home is completely safe before getting a bird.

It's the fumes that are toxic as far as I'm aware so unless you like setting your umbrellas on fire I think it'll be okay.

Wow, it’s amazing what they put Teflon in - I wouldn’t have thought of umbrellas :) I agree with Owlet, I believe it’s the fumes created from heating that are toxic. It’s awesome that you are planning ahead.... so much safer for your new companion when you do get one!
