Red Poop!

Hi Guys, I bought my dusky headed conure home a little more then a week ago and he seemed perfectly fine! This morning I checked up on him and his poop is red! It isn't bloody or anything. It's just red. I'm feeding him zupreem fruit blend pellets with a seeds mix and he does tend to pick out the red pellets more. Is this a sign that he is sick should I be taking him to the vets? or is it just the pellets?

lol, it's probably just the pellets. I was feeding fruit blend, too, and stopped because Midi's red poops were scary and dyed everything she pooped on.

yeah its the pellets! its scary when they do colourful poops for the first time. angel had blueberries this morning has done a bluey purple poop ha ha!!

lol melly blueberry poop stains are insanely hard to get out or furnishings lol, like black cherries, pomegranet! lol

but poop is a good indication of your birds overall health, so if its ever a funny colour not connected with what they have been eating, then vets!

Yep, pellets. This really freaks you out at first...wait until they eat a lot of watermelon and get really watery poop. Unusual color or consistency, look at what they've been eating first and if you can't find an explanaition there, call the vet.

Perhaps a pellet brand that doesn't have dyes? As you can see, the dyes are for visual pleasure only and they go right through the bird. Generally their poop looks like what they've been eating/up to. Charlie's is really watery after he has a bath too as he plays and drinks so much water.

Probably the pellets. Romeo loves sweet potato, the next day her poops are bright orange. However its always a good idea to still go to the vet. I would defiantly go to at least get established at an avian vet. Its good to know that your bird is otherwise healthy and doesn't have any problems, this is also vital that you have a baseline. This way if something does change you have something to compare it to. Also a lot of veterinarians will only see emergency cases if they are already established clients. This way if you end up in the Emergency clinic at 3 a.m. and the vet on staff doesn't see birds they can call in your Dr. Congrats on your new addition

It's the zupreem. It really annoys me that they color that stuff. I buy the natural, I fear the color would do damage to my baby.

My previous girlfriend had a green cheek and switched to the colored zupreem. The bird had different color poop because some days he would decided he liked one color over the other.

I concur with everyone else. It is probably just the coloring from the pellets.

I feed my GCC the Zupreme fruit blend and his poop come out all different colors. I had the same concerns when I first started feeding it to him. I am feeding my new bird the Zumpreme natural pellets to avoid this.

I agree with Molcan2, that if you haven't already done so, it would be good to take your conure for a well visit with an Avian vet (preferably a board certified one). Having a relationship with a good Avian vet could save your bird's life some day. Plus, you can get some good advice for caring for your new bird.

well mine like to eat the purple and red ones of the zupreem so sometimes they have multi colored poop ha !! Ha !!! but I also feed zupreems garden goodness avian diet and that is natural colored .

My green cheek LOVES red colored things. I mix Zupreem Natural and Fruitblend for him, and he always eats all of the red Fruitblend pellets first, which causes some pretty red droppings. Sometimes I take the red pellets out for a while just to make sure it's just the coloring, and it goes back to normal color. I feed those red pellets to my mice actually, they love red things too, lol.
