Salvaged Dome Skylight As Perch Poop Catcher - Photos

I'm working on a new hanging perch for the corner of the sitting room. My friend found a second hand perch in a charity shop for £7.95 with feeding bowls. I just need to replace the wooden part of the perch.

It's very similar to this one:


I then salvaged a skylight dome which was being thrown out, I'm planning to hang it beneath the perch via ropes or chains to catch poops. The flange of the dome is pre-drilled from where it was previously attached to a building

I'll post pictures of the end product when I'm done, hopefully with a happy Bella perched on it

Thats exactly what I have for Salty only I was able to grab these 3 foot wide stainless bowls from the company next door when they closed down. Works GREAT. I suggest you get the 18 inch barbque grill fromHome Depot to keep your bird out of the food and poops in the bottom. Line it with paper towels and clean up is literally seconds.
Bella should be small enough that you can use one of those round rope perches, and I use really heavy gage wire to hang the bowl.

Brilliant idea! And shored up with Al's suggestion (assuming said BBQ grill has no teflon or any other intrinsic materials that are dangerous to birds), this will make an amazing addition to the hanging perch.

Only other thing to watch out for is that there are no unsafe materials left from the dome's time as a skylight. Chances are there are traces of adhesive and such still clinging to the rim where it was attached to the roof.

I agree! It is amazing how much problem solving the humans end up doing because of the parrot, as a result I'm sure we all get extra brain training as a result of our feathered friends!

Thanks Anansi (Stephen), I'll be sure to try to find a stainless steel grill and make sure I give the skylight a very thorough clean. Im probably just going to stick with my usual elbow grease plus apple cider vinegar and my trusty steam cleaner, unless there's anything else you'd recommend? I can't see any traces of anything stuck to the done, so hopefully my usual cleaning method should be enough.

I'd go with a 1/3 bleach, 2/3 lysol solution, personally, while cleaning that rim. Just to give you the best chance of removing any residual chemicals. After that, you'd of course have to thoroughly wash it down with a hose until the smell is completely gone, and then allow it to dry in the sun.
