September 2025 POTM Contest!! 💖

What's sad is that for every bird like Avery who got lucky when saxguy64 rescued him, there are countless others that languish in miserable conditions, hence the need for good parrot rescues and donations to keep them afloat.

Here is Nameliss at 6 months. She began inserting herself into my life from day one. She began as crochet at day 3. I had so much fun (😦) working her as helper. Oddly she was so happy here. Her ego got such a big boost. She taught me how to crochet with helpful beak and talons. It was far more difficult learning computer with her around.

Awwwwwwwww @rheashard2, she's your love, your computer buddy and your beautiful crochet muse and model, who could possibly ask for anything more?! Thanks for your adorable submission!

Official Entry! I had been looking for a bird for a while, and I was in a local pet shop trying to decide what kind of bird I wanted. I was leaning towards a Caique, and then the owner of the shop pulled out a little lovebird called Pudding. She was adorable, very used to being handled and super cute! She had been with another family, but they had to move away and she was being rehomed. I went away to think about it, came back the next day to get her and was told she had already gone. Not surprised!

That is when the breeder told me she had some peach-faced lovebirds that she was hand-rearing. Did I want one of those when they were ready? I was like, hell yes! So, the first time I actually saw Salvador was the day I brought her home from the breeder. She came to me instantly and jumped up on my shoulder. And that was it! She used to sleep under my hair, and cuddle into my neck. It's funny looking back and seeing her dark beak and pale face.

P.S. Her name is Salvador because I thought she was a he, until we had a clutch of eggs back in 2023 haha

Yes Please! I did go back and try to edit it to add this is my official entry. Thank you. I love her to pieces. My constant companion.

Technically this would've been the first time I ever saw Lovejoy's face, although at the time I didn't know which of these little cuties was him!

His breeder said he had three little roosters from that year's clutch, and that he would keep one of them indoors to get him accustomed to being with people once weaned rather than putting him back in the aviary. He even started calling him "Lovejoy" when I told him that's what I was planning on naming him 💖

This is him a little later, when I FINALLY got to see him for the very first time. Here he's with his breeder's granddaughter, and I thought what a happy coincidence it was that she is blonde and likes wearing pearls too, just like me!

What a sweet baby he was! Certainly the lucky one of the clutch!

It's so fun to remember our babies when they really were babies. I sometimes tell Rocky "I remember when you were an EGG, and what a pretty egg you were!"

I wonder how much our birds remember from their "childhood".

Still another week for the contest to run, folks, so plenty of time to get those entries in!

Here's a snap of Fang as a baby. He was one of several youngsters at the shop but his little face was the one that screamed out "Buy me buy me buy me!!" And I did, largely because I thought he was a hen, cos juvenile 'tiels and hens look very much alike. Took him for his first check with our bird vet who took one look at him and said "Nice looking little rooster you've got there," based on nothing more than the way he walked. And he was right too, as he pretty much always was!

September 2025 POTM Contest!!!

This month's theme...

"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" 😍

We all remember that moment, when our eyes first met theirs, our hearts skipped a beat and we knew we were in love 💕

KAYNLYK.jpeg

(That little face! How could I not fall instantly in love with Lovejoy?!)

And whether your "baby" was a baby or a little more mature when that moment happened, we will never forget that instant when we knew that we would love them forever!

(Princess Peachie stuck in that pet shop with that awful single wing clip. Resistance was useless!)

(Lilly Pilly got off to a rough start but soon became my little Velcro bird!)

Or it may be that "love at first sight" blossomed between two of your birds, in which case we want to see that too!!

(Goodness knows that's how it was when these two first laid eyes on each other!)

Just for fun, here's Rocky the budgie at a few hours old. Love at first sight doesn't begin to describe how we feel about our Rocky.
I'll never forget when Rocky was born on November 14, 2022. I wasn't even sure her egg was still viable after cooking in the incubator for almost three weeks. When I candled it that morning I ran into the living room where my husband was sitting screaming "There's a bird inside and it's peeping at me!" There was no hole in the egg yet, and we had no idea how long the hatching process would take. A day or two, maybe? Would he need any help? We both had to work from 3 to 9 so we reluctantly put the egg back in the incubator and went to work, prepared to keep vigil over The Egg until The Baby hatched. We had all the necessary supplies to hand feed our new baby but it was our first time and we were both very nervous.
When we got home from work at 9:30pm I ran to the incubator and there she was! She had broken out of the shell and was kicking and squirming around the incubator- a strong, healthy baby at 2 grams. I read that you shouldn't feed the newborn until "several hours" after hatching so we went to bed at 11pm but I didn't sleep. At about 2am I prepared her formula and sat on the floor because I was afraid of dropping her. I cradled her in my warm palm, head pointing up and supported between my thumb and forefinger. To my surprise and delight, as soon as I touched the edge of the baby-sized spoon to her little beak she began to lap up the formula and I watched it run down her esophagus into her crop. When her crop was nice and round, I wiped her tiny face and put her back in her incubator with a little stuffed Goldfinch to cuddle with. Later that morning, my husband John named her Rocky because she was a fighter and he was convinced Rocky was a boy. The feeding routine took over our lives for the next 30+ days as Rocky grew into the beautiful budgie she is today, loaded with personality. Rocky isn't a "sweet" budgie- she's so much more than that. She decided at a few months old that she didn't like hands and she set boundaries that we respect to this day. She's friendly, smart, fearless and independent, the alpha female of our flock, and is very bonded to us. She prefers our company to other budgies except perhaps for her cagemate and faithful manservant Beau, who adores her. We've raised two more babies since then but Rocky will always have a special place in our hearts.

Now we must share our food with Rocky, including roast beef and cheese.

Adorable! Uglow loves cheese and chicken - he gets so excited for his tiny piece of chicken when I cook it. I have to hide the cheese I eat...

Nameliss loves cheese too. It's a tie between pepper jack and sharp cheddar. I know it is bad. Cheese is on my 'closet' list, along with tomatoes, onions, garlic and more. This means that I make a bird safe substitute that looks identical to mine. If not I eat in a separate location. Unfortunately I have a limited amount of endurance for the baby bird being neglected act!
