Oh, what a scare but glad the investigative process found the likely cause. You certainly did the right thing by getting an emergency appointment!

Curious, did the vet initially mark the dosage on syringe with red indelible marker? Not placing blame, of course, but many do this to reduce improper doses.

Quick update:
Nico is doing way better. We got an air purifier to help with the dust that irritated his sinuses in the first place, and I did a deep clean of his cage and everything in it. He is off of the meds now (He was amazing for the week he had to take them, no fuss at all!), and eating more fruits and veggies (especially carrots and strawberries, which the vet recommended for Vitamin A).
