Too much bird for a beginner?

I really encourage you to clip Mishka while at Vet. If you do I am pretty sure I can talk you through having Mishka see your hand in a positive way within a week. The wings will grow out later but in meantime it will help you tremendously.

I'll have her do it when I go see her (the vet). I'm just excited she deigned to take treats from the hand yesterday! I needed that breakthrough. ;)

And Wildheart, I enjoyed your iguana story! It's always nice to know it could be much worse. :D :p

You should hold off on adding another bird until you have more time to devote to it. It sounds like you are already pushing it with one bird. Living in an apartment is also a problem as Amazons can be VERY loud and if you are not around a lot to spend time with your pets, it will make things worse. There is also no guarantee your current bird will get along with a new "family member". Be very careful; birds are a heavy-duty responsibility and can also be extremely expensive to maintain. Annual exams and full blood work can run you 400.00, and if you have a more complex health issue....well, watch out. Too many folks jump in too fast, realize what they have done and then we end up with what we have now: Too many birds in foster care, with rescue organizations or back in the pet store waiting for a new home.

Whoa- I just went back and saw that you have only had your bird for three months? Is that right? And you have a dog???

Then NO WAY to another bird, period. You have barely gotten started with the bird you have and you will not even know it's true personality until after at least a year.

Impulse buying is not something one should ever do, especially with animals of any kind. Glad you came here for feedback before you jumped in......

I wonder if there's a toy or something I can get that she can snuggle with...

I got Nicky a "cuddle buddy" to sleep with and he loves it! It's basically a fuzzy thing that birds can snuggle into. It's the same material that they make those fuzzy huts out of. I love how cuddly sun conures are!

How long have you had this bird? I have had dexter for 6 weeks he will only put one foot on my hand, but will let me scratch his head, this morning he stepped out onto my knees as i sat beside his cage for about 10 seconds - a huge break through i am guessing that training a bird can be a long process. one day i'd like another but i'm happy Dexter and i are learning the ropes together
