Jet destroying a book. I dont mind him chewing up the book but is it safe

Jet loves to chop up pretzels into little pieces. He eats some but prefers to shred them. He also chews up paper plates and books im trying to read.

His toys not so much.

Any ideals for homemade toys for him.

I almost bought some skewers today but was worried about the pointy ends.

Other than lolipop sticks I dont know what else to try. Also is styrofoam bird safe?

If he's a paper chewer, go to the grocery store, and get him a phone book.

Cardboard boxes are always good. I stuff things into empty soda 12 packs all the time.

If you are really in a pinch.. I often walk around my bird room and leave everyone with a wadded up ball of paper if im in a hurry and going to be gone all day; they seem to enjoy the texture and the mystery of it all. You could even hide treats in the wad. Its fast, easy, and virtually free. Also, don't allow him to put his beak on the book. Stop him before it happens EVERY TIME. Each time you allow your bird to do something you are reinforcing that behavior. If you dont want him to chew your book, stop allowing him to touch it. Tell him no, push him (gently) away, and stick to your guns. He should have already been given something to occupy his mind if you are planning to read in front of him

Newspaper is also always a favorite, I will cut it into long strips about two inches wide, hole punch all at the top and tie together and hang on the cage. I give my new amazons little pouches made from coffee filters, and filled with shredded newspaper and treats.

I buy some of those dog balls that have the hexagon holes (not big enough for the bird to get there head stuck in), and wrap toilet paper around chunks of millet for them. For the aviary, we shred newspaper and make a container of it that hides millet and pellets and other seeds, and pour it out into a tray for the budgies to forage through. Also, you can stick toilet paper through the cage bars so it can hang, and my conure enjoys shredding it. Occasionally, I'll even fill up his happy hut with it, and he'll "angrily" shred through all of it until he can get back into his happy hut.

a paper towel roll with randomly cut slits in it and a bunch of popsicle sticks shoved through the slits. you can put a nut or two in the middle, trapped by the sticks.

I call it a paper towel porcupine, My guys destroy them with extreme prejudice!!!!

Also, Skewers are good for this too, if the points bother you, cut them off...

Another good and messy one, go to office depot and get a box of calculator paper. Hang a roll in the cage so they can tear at it and unroll it fairly easily.

You will soon have a cage with 6 in of fresh paper in the bottom of it. lol

Good idea! Just don't use thermal paper.

Oh god, if I only knew that was probably why so many people came to buy that! I should have stocked up on it when my store was in liquidation!

Those are some great ideals. I will definitely give most if not all a try. Last night I simply cut a paper plate in strips and triangles and strung them up.

Save all the parts of destroyed bird toys and recycle them or just throw them in a bowl and let him have at it!

Smokey and Cinder LOVE q-tips. I was thinking about tying a bunch of q tips together in the center to make a ball and hang in the cage.

Just be careful with the q tips, Ive seen birds actually eat the ends which is dangerous and could cause an impaction.

Go on Pintrest web site and you'll find thousands of cool ideas for bird toys and ideas you never would have thought of for parrots.

Have any old paperback books you thought were lousy? Don't give them to Goodwill! Give him a book of his own . Drill a hole in it and attach it to the cage with a quick link. Maybe string some beads to the quick link too.

I take paper lunch or wine bags and crumple them up longways and weave them in and out of the cage bars for a quick shreddable toy.
