Veterinarians

I somewhat disagree with that adage, that it's too late. You know your bird...you know their behavior. I would know right off the bat if my bird was acting different not only by his behavior out of the cage, but in the cage. I've never not known when one of my birds was sick.

Now, with that said, for someone that just "has birds" and maybe isn't as attune with the birds as we are (the people on this forum, because just being on this forum tells me a lot about you)

Golden Conure is one of my next 3 birds for sure. That's one hell of a change from bearded dragons to birds. It's interesting that reptile people tend to be bird people but not the other way around. From my experience anyway. We have a mohave python (my son has one) but I've always been a reptile person too.

That's great news on your vet. Certification doesn't mean a thing to me. Just means they passed the tests. I'd hire a vet who has birds and sees birds regularly and maybe stays on top of the latest aviculture medicine over someone that is avian certified but doesn't even have birds of their own.

It's like, I'd rather hire a kid with no college but he's a kick ass software developer over the guy with the Computer Science degree who did some programming in one of his college courses.

Well I met the Missus just as the last of 5 dragons passed away (ripe age of 12). I don't think she could tolerate having live crickets and bugs. The birds were a courtesy of having kept our neighbors pineapple for 6 weeks while he was hospitalized. After returning Petey I was asked when we getting ours. I don't have to save for sending them to college.

I agree with above! It's true in humans and people. You know your bird. You're going to pick up on something' wrong. That's the most important ingredient for any pet owner to have. It's essential for birds. But they do give signs that an aware owner can pick up on. Combined with your willing vet that is a great combination.

Thanks @osklvste - totally agree.... I'm connected to the hip with my bird most of the day so if he's acting weird, I will know for sure. @Bradmtx - I meant to say bearded dragons are pretty awesome too though! And you can give crickets and mealworms, black fly larvae, etc..to parrots too! My sun conure loves mealworms and black fly larvae. If you do get crickets, get the kind with the softer legs...I guess there is a type that has softer spines on their legs. I never tried those, but Walker does love him some black fly larvae on occasion.

Knowing something is wrong is the critical first step I agree with.
But the veterinarian has to know the right questions to ask.
Mine didn’t. It’s that simple.

With Bingo I kept telling him he was acting like he was trying to throw up or regurgitate but something was wrong.
I even showed him a video.
But he didn’t find anything wrong till it was to late and even I could see something growing in his mouth/throat.

My CAV is a poor diagnostician.

I think its about time we all sign off . . .
Whether its our wife, husband, children, or pets - if you don't associate the signs when they start, they then become problems.
If you don't care for them in the acceptable manner of present day enlightenment, then when the time comes when you want them to function, they don't, or function they won't

I am sorry that happened. That infuriates me because some doctors are completely incompetent and even if it is staring them in the face they won’t see it.
