I am interested in purchasing a toaster oven from Black and Decker. I asked if the model I want is coated with Teflon. The manufacturer said it was PTFE free Zinc coating. Is this safe for my parakeet as far as toxic fumes. Wanted to check since it is PTFE PTFO free as per Black and Decker. Please advise on zinc coatings for food appliances for cooking. TIA

They must mean the heating element, as the actual tray the food will be on is almost %1000 will be 316 stainless steel. I should think B&D would only sell a FDA approved food service device.

wrench13 : I am really unsure about use of Zinc coating on the Heating Elements as they become 'Red' hot. Not certain of the exact temperatures involved here, but Zinc's low melting temperature, would be below that point. Edit: Zinc melts at 430 degree C.

For the OP: Zinc, is classified as a Heavy Metal, which is a Poison for both Humans and Parrots. The most common method of Zinc entering the Body is by digesting it. With the zinc coated surface, someplace inside the toaster oven the likelihood of your Parrot coming into contact with that zinc surface would be very limited.

Zinc can 'off-gas' (transition from a molten state to a gas state, someplace below Steel become molten.

Personally, I have never been a fan of toaster ovens as they quickly become yet another kitchen device that is rarely used. But that is me!
