DIY Safe?

I am very much a crafty person (or like to think I am), and so I thought... make my own bird toys. No biggie! My lil' quaker comes home tomorrow (yay! Excitement!), and I've spent the past few weeks buying things to make toys with. Among the laundry list of items: cotton rope (laundry line style), large, colorful buttons (plastic, Walmart variety), 'pony beads' (plastic, Walmart), raffia (uncolored, dollar store variety), whiffle balls and straws. Lots and lots of straws.

I've included one picture of something I've recently made my quaker, and another picture of a similar toy I made (the straw toy). More are on the way if I can put aside this nagging worry that these toys just aren't safe for my bird.

How likely are birds to eat the things they destroy? I keep hearing people say how their birds love straws, and show pictures of the bird chewing on the straw but does that chewing ever lead to eating? Would that then make the sproingy straw toy unsafe to leave in the birds cage unattended?

FWIW, I am used to dogs where... well, everything eventually gets eatten!

looks great all those are safe I dont think it ever leads to eating just chewing I make almost all my toys and my birds havent ever eaten them just destroyed them

Thanks Marcia! I am probably getting pretty annoying with all my questions, but I am terribly excited to be bringing home my lil' quaker. I'm planning a stop to the store on the way home to pick up a last few bits of odds and ends (Cheerio's as a treat are among them)... Hope to post a few more pics tonight of the rest of the toys I've made.

Admittedly, too, making those sproingy straws is way, way too much fun (and terribly relaxing)!

not annoying at all thats what this forum is for right ill bet you must be so excited!!!!! And yea I love making bird toys its fun.

Beyond excited! It's going to be hard to give my quaker the few days it'll take to settle down once I get home with him/her, but I definitely want to start things off on the right foot. So in the meantime: Lots and lots of toys!

not annoying! its better to ask questions and do things right and cooper has never eaten the toys he destroys. that toy looks great! cooper loves straws! and congrats on getting you quaker soon. they are awesome!
