Unhappy Parrot is ill! Help appreciated!

First off, Vets are only open Monday to Saturday.. today is Sunday, and there is only an emergency number available to call. But the price would be SO STEEP if I were to have someone come around.

My male Kakariki Yuushi has been odd today, not quite his normal self. He had a completely empty crop this morning and was just sitting there, not eating or drinking. So I gave him some of my Vetafarm Neocare formula and helped him drink a few drops of water with an eye-dropper. He seemed to pick up for a couple of hours.

He has been isolated in a cage in our end room so we can monitor him. I just checked him again now and he was sitting in the corner all fluffed up (Kakarikis normally fluff up, btu this time it just doesn't look right..) he is even allowing me to pick him up, pet him, the whole lot. Now keep in mind this is an aviary bird. Never really been handled.

This is just not normal! His wings have gone a tad droopy and I'm fretting so much! My poor now deceased Muta looked a similar way before he began having seizures and passed away 30 minutes later. I'm stressing so much! What should I do!? *wants to snug my little Yuushi man, as he is my favourite Kakariki out of the 10 we own*

Re: Parrot is ill! Help appreciated!

You are almost going to have to have a vet look at the bird.....the problem could be any number of things, including a disease that it could pass on to your other birds.....

Good luck.....

Re: Parrot is ill! Help appreciated!

Also birds can die quickly after showing signs of symptoms! By the time they start showing signs they're already pretty sick, so it would be wise for you to contact the emergency vet!

Also for the time being while your calling the vets, wrap his cage with a blanket and put a heat lamp on him to keep him warm.

Unhappy Re: Parrot is ill! Help appreciated!

Did everything you guys recommended.. Vets wouldn't pick up the phone.. Yuushi was fine half an hour ago, showing improvement.. went and checked on him again, and he only just died. :'( *extremely distraught* I think it was a disease... probably caught from one of the wild birds that has been hanging around the past few days... *sighs deeply* I should probably go sterilize everything now.. He was my favourite too

Re: Parrot is ill! Help appreciated!

Kinny I am so so sorry I am in tears knowing what you are going through I feel your pain
You did everything possible to try save
Yuushi

Please do sterilize everything now
Are all your birds in one room? worried it could have been a contagious disease and be passed on to your other birds.
Have all your birds checked by the vet as soon as possible.

Yuushi in now at rest, and pain free
Be strong, we are all here for you
In my thoughts and prayers

It's just hard losing a beloved family member.. I really do feel like they are like my own children. *sighs in an upset manner* And it's always my favourites too... which just doesn't make sense since they are the ones who I take even more special care of. The only special Kakariki I have left now is my Haru. And gosh I pray she doesn't fall ill! Every other bird of mine is perfectly fine. My least favourite ones always live on for years and years. *so not fair!*

Yuushi was the only bird inside the end room for today, he was originally outside sharing a cage with his mate and another female Kakariki (subspecies) she lost her mate last year and all 3 of them get along, so we had her in with Yuushi and Bou. There is one of my Green Cheek pairs in a large cage above them, and a pair of Scarlet Chested Parakeets to their side.

What would the Vets do..? Take blood samples..?

Mmm

This is Yuushi (Bou is to the right)

Yuushi at the front

*snuggles my little man in my dreams*
