Eclectus Parrots

Hi I'm greatdan1,I have 2 Eclectus parrot,the male is Marshall the girl is Molly. We have them for a month now & we fell in love with them.Their both 5 months old.I think I found my hobbies.I have been reading books on how to take care of them but need to talk to other Eckie parents :red: .....

Hello Terry 57 & Anansi,thank you for making us feel welcome. I have to figure out how to put Molly & Marshal picture,a little slow on technology but love to show my babies. I am new Eckie parent & looking forward to learn how to meet their needs.

Hi and welcome. What subspecies are they, Solomon, Red Sided, Vos? Are they brother and sister or unrelated?

In my opinion with eclectus the most important things are diet, frequent baths and avoiding clipping wings if at all possible. Hopefully you did your homework on diet prior to getting them and are feeding lots of fresh fruits and veggies.

Lots of eclectus lovers here to help with any questions you might have. I would also encourage you to read through the information available on the website "Land of Vos" it is an excellent source of information.

After that, click on the "Insert Image" icon located in the tool bar and paste the copied URL into the supplied field. Once that is done, the pic will appear in your message box.

My husband just bought it a month ago as a present for him and me and my 5yrs. daughter fell in love with them so I took an interest on caring for them,he never had a Eclectus parrot and didn't do the research so I'm doing it so I have to call the store to find out subspecies or their related or not I'll let you know when I find out my main concern the last month is to feed them vegetables,fruits & warm meal once a week w/whole grain pasta & a cooked chicken.I realize I have a lot of work to do w/these babies,I just want them to be happy,healthy,safe & love....

The fresh fruits and veggies need to be a daily thing. You want to shoot for at least a minimum of 80% of their diet being fresh real whole foods.

Thank you labell,I am observing Molly's body laguage to understand why she bite & Marshall is a good boy never bite & steps up right away. Well,lets have the fun begin!

You should be teaching them both to not only step up to your hand but also to a stick. There WILL come a time especially with Molly where you will need to use the stick to get her or risk being bit. My female Solomon Jillie would only come out of her cage on a stick for months, she would step up great on the stick each and every time but would bite me if I went to get her with my hand so the stick ended up being less stressful for her and certainly less painful for me. Now I can get her with my hand every time but she went through a phase at about a year or so where she was just nasty about coming out of her cage.

You will read LOTS of nasty stuff all over the internet about females (most of that by people who just don't understand these beautiful red headed gals), they ARE different than the boys for certain and you need to handle them a little different but they are worth it!

I don't know what your set up is right now I am hoping you have them in separate cages for a couple of reasons 1. Working with them and keeping them sweet to HUMANS will be much easier if they have their own space. 2. females WILL hog the food and you won't be able to keep an eye on how much your boy is eating, this is really really important with them being so young! and 3. if you got them from a pet store they are more than likely brother and sister so you never want them to mate.

I just got your post,I am using the stick to have her step down.The good thing is Molly & Marshall love each others company,I see them kissing eachother,sharing food in their mouth & eat together in the same bowl without a fight & they sleep close to each other. I'm introducing them w/warm water spray at first they don't know how to make out of it but this morning they like the water on their face so sprayed all over the body they like it,they start shaking their feathers and go with the preening.I have to be patient so they feel secure & safe.I wanna earn their trust.
