Jardine Parrot
Golden Cap Conure
Good morning,

I'm Brad from Maine. I've been lurking for some time, enjoying the forum and learning a lot. My wife and I have two young parrots, a golden cap conure named Mia who is lovely. We also have a Jardine named Green Bean (my wife would ask me to disclose that she had no part in naming Green Bean and she likely regrets letting me be responsible for naming him). Green Bean is the reason I'm transitioning from a lurker to a poster and hopefully someday a contributing member.

Late June we saw a Jardine Parrot at a trusted local pet store. I was immediately drawn to him as I had been wanting a larger bird for a long time. I talked with the people at the store and the gave me tons of information on him. He just came in and he was stressed from shipping and was very skittish. He was young, hatching March 5th, 2015, about 3 1/2 months from when we first saw him.

We left - without him - and I did lots of research on Jardines. The breed was very appealing to me. After a couple of weeks, I decided a Jardine was the larger bird I was looking for. My wife and I went back to the pet store and talked with them more about the Jardine they had. He was 4 months old name, hand feed, but wasn't very happy with people trying to touch him. He was a scared bird. I bought him and named him Green Bean :green1:.

Getting him home, he was very scared. I couldn't pick him up but if I approached slowly, I might get to touch his beak without him showing any negative body language. Immediately I contact BirdTamness and started working Hani to tame Green Bean. We're on a slow road to get Green Bean comfortable and taking food from hand, which he does but is hesitant and extremely caution after about three weeks, spending a lot of time with him daily. We're making progress though.

Enough of my rambling - I do have some real questions:

Green Bean has a colored head, from what I read, they shouldn't have a colored head until they are more mature.

Green Bean talks, although never with us in the room, he talks and it sounds clear. I don't know what he says as I'm always in a different room when it happens. It seems like he has multiple phrases from a couple words to six or eight word phrases.

Green Bean makes the distinctive low-batter-smoke-detector-chime, which he has never heard from us.

Green Bean laughs, which sounds like a cartoon character laugh.

My question - are these things normal for a 4 month old Jardine? Could I have been mislead or misold a much older Jardine? Could his shyness be something different than young bird / non-imprinted shyness?

My fear is that he's an older bird that never had much human interaction. A retired breeder or a rescue pet? I'm hoping to get some insight that might help with his training and development.

I have talked with the pet store who does believe the March 5th hatch date. I have tried to track down the breeder based on the band but it's not registered in any of the databases I found.

After all the store, here's Green Bean!

Welcome to the forum, Brad! Thank you for the lovely intro and Congrats a little late on Green Bean. I like your choice of names, Green Bean has tremendous potential, Jelly Bean, Beanie Baby, Clean Bean, Mean Bean...

Sorry, I'm unable to open either of your links. I'm using an iPhone so others may be able to see Green Bean's photos. Here's a link for posting pics or you may want to use photobucket.

I couldn't either, I just chalked it up to a crappy work computer, lol

One of the other items that makes me question his age is that he as a little over growth on the lower beak, just on one side. He's been working it down on the sticks and once in a great while, on the cuddle bone or lava stone.

Hello and welcome. I'm from Maine too! :)

I've actually never heard of the kind of that kind of parrot, but he's beautiful. I like the 'flame' pattern on his head. He's got 'budgie pattern' wings. lol.

Welcome to the forum!! Green Bean is gorgeous and looks very happy! Can you get the breeder information from the store at all? What does his band say? I'm not terribly familiar with Jardines but he does definitely look older than 4 months. Not that that makes him any less wonderful but you shouldn't have to pay the baby price for an adult bird!

I'm not sure what pet store you got Green Bean, but I got Skittles at PetLife.

Skittles had a band on his leg that said "CEW-10-14". The CEW is the initials of the breeder, the 10 is the year of hatching. I don't remember what the 14 is for. But check Green Bean's band.

The pet store is 'supposed' to have that information on hand. You are also entitled to get a health certificate with any animal purchase. It's Maine law, you should tell the pet store that. I had to fight my pet store to get it for Skittles. They had told me he was hatched in August of 2010, but he was actually hatched in March of 2010, as his certificate said. The pet store lied, and I caught them at it.

Welcome! Green Bean is a cutie, but judging by the pics I'd have to say that looks like an older bird for sure. On top of that, he's doing household noises, and talks a lot for a 4 month old Poicephalus. Pois usually aren't known for talking extensively real early. I think he was someone's pet before, and the store wasn't being forthcoming. The pics say he's older. Not that it matters :) most likely he isn't elderly, and has a long life ahead!

I love Poicephalus parrots, and have 2 myself. A Red Bellied and a Ruppell's.
