Parrot clubs

Is anyone a member of a parrot club? Tell me what it's like, what do you do at meetings? Any special activities?

I've been an on/off member of a large club that has seen many leadership changes over the years. They typically meet once monthly and discuss aviculture, club business, and have a speaker. Sometimes the speakers are mundane, but occasionally renown subject matter experts.

They generally have holiday parties, and for many years have resided in a large Masonic Hall.

I e been in two. All I can tell you is that it depends entirely on the people involved. It can be the best or the worst.

Did go to one, sometimes it was informative, others not so. Can be cliquey if you come in new, not an uncommon thing. The birds pay no attention to one another just their parronts.

Topics covered were:-
bird first aid and kits given out.
Recognising illness
Organised trips to parrot supplier/shows/bird sanctuary.
Craft making evenings around Halloween, Christmas and Easter
Guest speakers.

Long time member and officer from time to time, of our local Bird Club.

Bird Clubs are the needed base for there to be a Bird Show /Fair in your area. The major problem that Bird Clubs are faced with is getting people to come to meetings. As a general statement, near all types of Clubs are suffering from low attendance.

As stated above, they commonly are a great source for information, socializing (face to face) with other Bird owners. Here in the Great White North we do not meet in January and February and also during the Summer months and that has worked well.

If you have one in your area, I would recommend attending. Yes, it takes a bit of effort on your part, but in the long term it is worth it!

Ive never seen or been to one but the concept it cool. Like plumsmom mentioned, all meeting type things have a tendency to be cliquey, and like SilverSage said, they all entirely depend on who they consist of, and who you are. One group may be younger, eccenttic and outgoing while another older, reserved and more serious - and you may hate one I like or vice versa.

One question I have is, do you bring your bird(s)? If so, I imagine theres a huge potentual for something going wrong.. I know people go to dog runs and such but parrots are more easily effected by illness and many are airborne.

Hi, the cliquey bit can be overcome if it is run by someone who goes the extra mile to help integrate the new members to the long standing ones, ages are irrelevant really, if you have a connection ie parrots . I did take Plum along a few times when I had sussed the other birds and their owners out, it then had several new members who quite honestly knew 'not a lot' and my confidence faded in bringing him. It also conflicted with his bedtime and once he sets his mind there is no stopping him LOL. Don't let me or anyone else put you off at least going to a couple of meetings, you never know you may love it?

I brought my birds. Our meetings were held outdoors which greatly lowers the risk of disease transmission. Our club also placed a HUGE emphasis on vet care and disease testing and prevention to the point that some of us would pay for the care of new member birds when necessary. Because of this, I had a pretty good knowledge of the health status of the other birds.

It was a great opportunity for my birds to be socialized with other bird lovers and they loved the trips

I used to be a faithful member of a parrot club in New Mexico... they're pretty common out West. I enjoyed it!
I went to a couple of local meetings but the emphasis was on finches and canaries.
Maybe I'll take another look.

Dont worry youre not stopping me, I was just adding on what I know of experience from other types of neetings especially AA type things. I dont really care if its cliquey, Im not a shy person, but as long as theyre down to earth people. Sounds cool, not sure if theres any in MIA but will have to look into it.
