Many of you remember earlier in the year when a friend and I went through a very emotional time trying to save some baby budgies. 6 of the 8 babies survived, but only 2 of the 10 adults are still alive. The babies were adopted out with very specific and amendment instructions that should that home be unable to care for them, they be returned to us. A few weeks ago I saw that one of the families was moving off island. I contacted the woman and checked in, asking if she needed help with anything, was she going to be able to take the birds with her, was she SURE and made sure she knew that, no matter what, if things changed I would take the birds back no judgement. She swore up and down that she would NEVER consider parting with them, and that she had already paid for their flights and I had nothing to worry about. Today my neighbor across the street who knows I like birds sent a me a screen shot of a facebook garage sale page that I am not a part of, a post giving away "free baby parakeets." My first thought was "more budgies is the last thing I need." but I glanced through anyway, and was stunned to find MY BUDGIES (no longer babies) being given away for free by someone I had never even heard of! I went full on drama on a different page for the same area, and got people to help me contact the lady who was giving them away. She had been given them by the woman who insisted she would never part with them, RIGHT AFTER she told me she had already paid for them to fly!! The lady who was now giving them away was very understanding and quick to give them to me when I explained the situation. We went to pick them up, found them in a cage half the size of the one I gave her with plastic budgie dowels, and the only wood or chew toy in sight was a tiny dowel ladder. These babies already had deformed beaks and I had been VERY CLEAR on the need for natural perches and wood to chew on, cuttle bone, etc.
My friend and I loaded them in the car, me shaking and her in tears. These babies will NOT be looking for new homes ever again. I understand not keeping them, but I WARNED her of the price to ship them before she took them home, and then I CHECKED with her when her husband got orders and I OFFERED to take them back!!
Some people may wonder why we are so upset if we rehomed them in the first place, but we never intended to keep them, we just wanted to keep them ALIVE. I can't keep every bird I take out of a bad situation, and these guys were NOT in a good place. I think the fact that 80% of the adults died within 4 months is pretty informative of just how bad it was.
Ugh I am just LIVID. Well they are back with us now. Hanging with Marie and Toulouse at the home of fellow member and co-rescuer amjokai.
