Those birds were so lucky you came in. I'm glad to hear everything is turning around there.
I went into one of the petstores here(well it's about 20 miles away) and they had a beautiful Sun Conure. Well I love love love Sun Conures and I probably stayed a good forty five minutes playing and talking to this little guy. It was hard not to pull out the credit card and bring him home but I know i'm not ready. So I go to the counter with all my birdie toys and treats and there setting on the counter was a burning scented candle. I freaked!!! I politely told the girl that that was very bad for the birds and asked her to take it outside. She told me they burn one all the time. I asked to speak with the manager and she politely pointed me to the back room. No one that worked there knew how harmful they were. The manager said she would get info of harmful things to birds off the web and put a list for the employees.
Why do they take these beautiful creatures in and not learn at least a little something about them?
I haven't been back yet but I plan to go this weekend if I don't get snowed in. I sure hope I see the list or at least there are no candles burning!

Anyway I wanted you to know I thought about your experience when I did this. Wasn't no way I was leaving that store until I spoke my mind!

Hey Antionette, I didnt read the second page - thats wonderful my friend. You did great!!! We should start up branches around SA and get people involved who share the same passion. Scorpions would have nothing on us - hahaha. You were very brave and Im glad that you could help them and that they were willing to change their ways - shame, feel sorry for them too...

I"m so proud of you standing your ground, and speaking your mind.

Staff members should be people with a love of animals, not just sales persons. What I don't understand is how they employ someone, without any knowledge, and the upkeep of the animals.

"PARROT POLICE" let us continue speaking for our feathered frriends who can't speak for themselves.

Take care
:grey:

Hey guys it's been a month and one day since my first visit to the pet shop.
Have been keeping tabs on them, visiting them different days and times.
They are doing a fantastic job, looking after the birds.
They have 3 AGC, hand rearing them, doing a great job.
Just shows, speak your mind and make a difference in a bird's life
:grey:Take care, and that of our feathered friends !!!!

I would not waste your time on the pet store employee's or Managers, it sound like abuse and it is illegal, i would just report them, because if they have any warning that some one is on to them then they will clean it up just long enough not to get in trouble.

This pet shop honestly did not know how to care for birds.
I spoke to them, gave them advise, and showed them what to do.
They have listened and learnt. I live about 5 blocks away from them, pop in whenever, probably about 4 times a week unannounced. Since my second visit, they have done a great turn around.
Actually yesterday, one the shop assistant's came to visit me, to see my bird Mishka, asking advise etc. I reckon I have made some new biride friends.
If approached the correct way, hopefully an excellent response will take place.
Perhaps this happens once in a life time, where they actually listened and learnt.

I WILL NEVER GIVE UP ON OUR FEATHERED FRIENDS !!!!

It's wonderful that you were able to help the quality of life for those birds. It's also amazing that the store's owner was so willing, not just to take advice, but to implement it. Kudos to you!

I can't believe this.....
I have not been into the pet shop for 2 weeks, due to a personal family matter.
Today went shopping, and popped in, to check on the birds.
The birds are doing great, chatting away, and playing. The cages are immaculately clean, with fresh fruit available.
The little ones they are handrearing, are looking so healthy. One of the little ones was sold today, the other two going tomorrow.
The owner was there, chatted to him. He said since all the advise and help they have received, it is now a pleasure to have birds in the shop.
They are no longer just climbing up the bars and screaming.
Spent about 30 minutes there, the Macaw was talking and talking.
Took up a lot of my time previously but it was all worth it.

When us humans are treated with love and respect we are happy :D
The same goes for our feathered friends :grey::blue2::whiteblue::green1::red:

That's a wonderful story (except the fact that you had to change things at the shop in the first place...). :) I can't believe they did the right thing, but it goes to show that not all people are bad. I bet if a lot of people did this, pet shops would most definitely improve. From now on if I see bad conditions in pet shops, I know I'll try and get them to improve things.
