Thank you for the update and am SO happy you found the cause and have eliminated it for future chicks. From the desciption you gave, I would have put money on the thickness being the cuprit. That just goes to show, that there are an unlimited amount, that can go wrong with hand rearing and the reason only experienced people, should do it, when even experienced rearers can make fatal mistakes. I would never have thought zink poisoning, as chicks with me never see any zink (usually from cages/aviaries).

It makes me think, that I have to double check my new nest boxes, that the nets for climbing out is without zink.

I don't know if charcoal could do any good, if the zink is already in the blood, but is there is still some in the new babies digestive system, charcoal could help soak some of the toxins out. To my knowledge there are no sideeffect from charcoal other than a need for some probiotics afterwards.
