There has actually been a nationwide effort by the NWTF - National Wild Turkey Foundation - to reestablish the population of wild birds across their native territories. They were once widespread, but hunted and eliminated, and in some areas introduced pheasant replaced them. But they are not only part of the native ecosystem, but our national heritage ... Ben Franklin proposed the wild turkey, instead of the bald eagle - as our national symbol. The wild ones are far smarter than the "bred for fast growth" commercial turkeys, eat bugs and are pretty interesting critters.

I once had someone from NWTF.org on the radio show I used to do!
